unfortunately, Lee Valley usually has no alabaster, and is much more expensive then having it shipped from usa, which is bigger sizes, and seems better quality then LV in article cWy0c.13388$ snipped-for-privacy@newsread2.news.pas.earthlink.net, Lyn J. Georgies Ceramic Supply in Portland Oregon has a large supply of both. Not real close...but a day's drive.

now has Brazilian Soapstone in blocks. Every imaginable colour you can think of. You can see samples on this site. I also have alabaster as well as other types of stone. Having it in blocks keeps the waste down. Stoneman Distributors will send it to you.

Someone once the best way to turn it is on sonebody else's lathe...in their shop. It makes a mess.

But...to answer your question...mostly with scrapers. And...it does make a mess. No shavings, just a real fine dust. Soapstone is particularly bad...make the floor real slippery. Wear a good dust mask, use a dust collector and filter system. I also have a bix fan in the window blowing out and a floor fan on the other side blowing towards the window.
