In my big cottonwood that I cut down this Spring I have some BIG Critters, Some kind of grub about 1/2 " in dia. and 2+" long. White body with a brown head. I have been trying to get one foe a picture but the Jay birds keep beating me to them. Does anyone have any idea what they are??

Richard,

Here is San Diego, we have a white grub-like bug called the horned borer (I think). the body tapers from head to tail and is about 1/2" wide and a 1/4" tall at the widest part. Somewhat of an oval cross section. The body looks like segements of decreasing size. Brown head. I've seen them just over an inch, but not as big as yours. Maybe the same critter - maybe not.
