Ten TIC ways to leave your turner (can I be OT from my own subject?)

From my veneer of expertise, social awareness and turning correctness, all gleaned from recently reading RCW, I post OT with TIC & :). Also with the fervent hope not to aggravate our loyal purists or to be plonked. Taking me seriously with flaming disagreement or with your additions is OK and welcomed.

*********************************************** Pecking Order for Woodturners

Upper Classes: Lower Classes: (elite) (slob)

1 Hone Grind 2 Shear-cut Scrape 3 Fill, rub & multi-coat I00-250 & wax 4 Decorate Plain Jane 5 Abhor utilitarian Best if useful 6 Embrace defects Smooth is good 7Hate gloss & shine Love mirrors 8 Galleries & museums Craft shows (behind glass) (card table) 9 Know a better way Seek help 10 Tasteful Atelier Dirty shop (studio) (garage) n.b. There is some social cross-over and passing re freehand vs jig people. Same with carbon, HSS or powder tool junkies. *********************** Both groups may mingle freely at a symposium, but the lower caste is expected to sit below the salt at banquet tables. This isn't considered to be divisive, just the way it is in our world. :) Respectfully submitted, Arch

Sorry for the mangled listing. Not funny. WebTv is to blame. In retrospect, I'm abashed for the whole post. A

My laughter was very slightly tempered by the truth in your observations. Billh

Arch,

Great list.

I would offer one change. I think #6 is reversed. Based upon my observations and a well-placed quote from John Jordan, I'll papaphrase by saying that, "Life is too short to turn ugly wood."

I don't consider myself upper class elite, but I mostly burn wood with cracks in it. I just don't waste my time anymore, preferring wood without cracks. An occasional bark inclusion or void, however, is no problem.

I suppose we should revise the old "takes two horses to have a race" to "takes two horses and an analyst?"

I think I almost rose out of the slob class today. Made some _really_ fine-shaped ornaments, as opposed to those which sell, but are not quite what I had in mind.

Entertaining and funny. Thanks for the posting. I am hanging this list in my shop. However, I have replaced 'elite' with 'snob'.

Maybe we should also add, "Made for a commision" and "the guy down the street wants one."
