Turning fig wood?

Jul 25, 2003 2 Replies

The neighbor trimmed his huge fig tree today. I had a look at the wood and it didn't look too special - mostly an off white with not much figure. Has anyone turned wood from a fig tree and what was your impression?

Thanks

Bruce

I had a chunk of fig stump once. Like you say, not a lot of figure, but it was wonderfully unstable. Suggest that you turn something thin as you can get it, then go back in the morning to see what you really made!

Yep I sure have used Fig. I fact I turned a goblet, acutally it was a Masser for a Mead competition. It shrinks tremendously. Very little feature the wood is light colored. Made a few 3" high x 1.5" wide goblets from it as well.
