Vertilathe?

If anyone here has an opinion on this product I'd love to hear it?

Go read the archives.  , which is now some place with a far less memorable name in google. Put in the newsgroup to search, put in your search term, enjoy. You'll find plenty of vertilathe spam posts, which pretty well makes the choice obvious, unless you're a spam lover. Opinions, plenty of those in the archives, too - if you're stapped for cash, you'd be better off making one of the mostly wooden lathes which have had some recent discussion becasue one of the magazines put one on the cover. I don't recall anyone who was not the spammer or one of his spam-puppets with anything good to say about it. I certainly don't have anything good to say about it. Don't waste your money or your time.

This setup might be okay for some.........that have never turned before on a real lathe. For me...............its just too weird. Save your money for a Jet Mini and learn how to turn on a "real lathe" not some novelty. You may be able to turn a variety of items on this setup, but I can't see how the skills you learn would ever transfer to a traditional lathe. I think you would be starting all over again when you finally get a traditional lathe.

There's some book or other that has plans for just that sort of thing. It looks cheap and dead easy to build out of stuff from Lowe's.

I got my first taste of turning on a drill press. It was enough to really give me the itch, but I can't say that it was all that worthwhile. (I was turning short dowels with the chuck, and shaping them with a four-in-hand rasp.)

I suggest that if you're really going to turn on a drill press, you should use a dedicated benchtop for the purpose, and lay it on its side. There's just so much side to side and body English in turning that I can't see doing it with any aplomb at all in a vertical orientation.

Better to shell out $240 for a JET mini and a set of HF turning tools, IMHO. That's what I've got right now. After a bit less than a month, I have actually produced a couple of things that aren't in the trash can. :)
