wolverine vari-grind jig question

I've been using my wolverine vari-grind jig to grind acceptable and sharp swept-back profiles (aka side grind aka Irish grind, etc.) on my bowl gouges. Question is how to use the jig to grind back the edges on spindle and/or detail gouges in a similar profile--would one use the bowl gouge setting (slide all the way "down") or the spindle gouge setting (slide all the way "up), or somewhere inbetween? Preliminary experiments with the spindle gouge setting have not been very successful so far (edges not nearly as sharp as gotten from bowl gouges).

thanks for some advice here.

I've always used mine in the up position on my spindle gouges. I've blamed the "less sharp" on them being cheaper starter gouges rather than the jig or sharpening system but maybe you're on to something. I wouldn't blame the jig per se, but think maybe it has more to do with the thickness of the "blade" maybe? On the bowl gouge settings the wings get pretty thin so maybe take a better edge.

Have you tried a quick hone with a fine stone after grinding? Might be instructive...

I just looked at a Sharpening DVD that came from AAW with the Membership Directory this year. It covers this jig and other topics. I have had this jig for 8 years and only now see how to use the adjustments.

The DVD was made in 2000, and was for sale. I guess they are now giving it out for renewals.
