advice regarding Rigid heddle loom

yesterday spent some hour dressing a loom , with somebody who recieved an old Rigid Heddle loom ,,,, problem was the wooden slats of the heddle , weren`t as young as they should be, some swollen with time some problematic ,,, thus the threads do not slide well ,,,, i think best sultotion would be to buy a plastic or metal heddle, i used to have a Northfield heddle , are they still working ? Would anybody here have a source for a heddle like that ??? mirjam

Many years ago I had a Beka loom which is made in St. Paul and sold at the LYS where I am taking my class. They have a web site at

. They have heddles but theymay or may not be what you need. They have an email address and wouldprobably answer questions. If you are interested in getting one, let meknow if there is anything I can do to help.

Mirjam, I'm glad it finally arrived. Don't feel badly about the mistake; I did the same on a previous exchange and to resend it.

Until a new heddle can be bought, can the old wooden slats be sanded or scraped smooth and waxed? or lightly oiled with furniture oil or sprayed with varnish and sanded again, etc? (You wouldn't use shellac because that gets sticky with moisture, but varnish shouldn't.)

I would think that waxing it with an old candle may do, if there is indeed enought space left between the slats. I would not oil it the wood may swell and make it worth. I do know that LeClerk in Candada does sell rigid heddles. Maken you own out of popsicle sticks is maybe another solution.

Good luck with your loom fixing job

I'm a terrible typist & I find that google will usually give you a choice to keep looking for what you typed, or to click on a link for the correct spelling. It's a good thing too, because I *always* type something wrong!
