Animal Print Afghan

Help...I always feel so needy when in this group. I am looking for a pattern to knit an 'animal print' afghan. Tried googling but no luck...if someone could just point me in the right direction.

Thanks again, Carol

Hi Carol,

What kind of animal are you looking for?

Are you looking for something like a leopard-skin pattern? Or a pattern with animal 'pictures'? There are kits around for Noah's ark afghans, would that work?

This isn't free, but I bought the Special Effects machine knitting book from Artika Designs, and I'm quite pleased with the animal prints. There's 2 different sizes of zebra, 3 different sizes of leopard, 2 different size dalmation dog spots, 2 different size cow spots, giraffe, tiger, and some other patterns like woodgrain and camouflage. The repeats run 8-40 stitches wide and up to 100 rows in length, requiring mixing different colors of yarns to get the effect shown in the samples. The tiger has stripes and goes from orange to white like a tiger does from its back to belly then back to orange like it's a single tiger pelt.

When working MK patterns by hand, I just remember that I'm working in stockinette and purl the even rows, and read the rows in the pattern book just like I would a HK pattern, making sure to read from left to right on one row then right to left on the next row. I heard people talk so much about converting from HK to MK, that I realized nothing could stop me from doing the reverse :-).

If you're looking for animal skin print, couldn't you just pick out your desired colours and work them in random or regular intervals (like intarsia, I guess) to get the effect? Sor tof a polka-dot or striped effect? Depending on what colours you want, some of the variegated yarns might even work.
