as Arte Johnson used to say... VEDDY Interesting....

hmmm. Since applying the plonk rules on one of my newsreaders for those trolling posts recently made, some people are also being plonked! A check showed similar IP's for one of the Italian trolls and a person in the midwest USA...an another in the _____________, USA. I actually don't like the midwest person anyway, so it's no skin off my butt, but I'm keeping the "blanked" person totally secret till I get to the bottom of this. Just a public service mssg. Noreen

And what is your public service message supposed to mean? The "italian" troll posts were all coming from the same two IPs, and they were both overseas from the US -- I check headers on all of them, and didn't see any originating from the "midwest". If your "midwest person" was posting from those IPs, then they weren't a "midwest" person. And if they're posting from something say Earthlink or AOL, the IP range could be the same whether they're posting from Dallas or Hoboken or Switzerland. Also keep in mind that internet connections will quite often move from point to point, connection to connection - it's not like two tin cans with a string.

Not sure just what you're trying to say, but I'd be a little careful about what you imply.

Or more specific? I sometimes post through an Italian news server (aioe.org) though I'm in the midwest. And my sent from address is sorta bogus - it's one I used to have but don't live there anymore so it's invalid. I use it to keep the spam down and because a moderated group has it on their auto-approval list so my posts go right through.

Is aioe.org Italian? I sometimes use that, too, although I think never for RCTY.

I've used it as well, Katherine and Sue, and it's neither of you, grin! It's NOT the person I thought from _______ (which I'll now say was the pacific northwest), but the midwest person IS on my _h_t list. :D Hugs, Noreen

Guys you are all talking latin here, and since I do not know that language, could you either stop this conversation or let us all in on what you are talking about....

Katherine what does aioe.org stand for, and why would you post anything through Italy. Live is complicated enough already.

Please someone shine some light on all the above

I think so.

I didn't think so ;) ... but just wanted to point out that you can't always tell where a post originates even by reading the headers.

Many internet service providers do not always provide news service or it may be slow, spotty or otherwise not worth using. So a person has several choices, pay, Google or free servers. Free servers can be accessed from anywhere in the world and one in another country is nearly as fast as one in your own country; it doesn't really matter, all you have to do is put the proper address into your newsreader.

But the fact that someone is on your own personal _h_it list doesn't make them a troll or spammer, which is what you seem to be trying to pin on. If their IP is that of the troll, it doesn't even make them a midwesterner, especially if they are going through another server as several of us do. It doesn't even make them whoever is on your personal vendetta list, as it's unlikely that anyone is the sole user of any connectivity service. Sorry to say, but to this observer, it sounds like you're stretching a little too hard to make a connection to support a personal agenda.

Els, One of the newsgroups I visit is not carried by my ISP, so a friend pointed me towards aioe.org, which is free, and which carries the other ng. I really don't know how any of this works, so just do as I am told.

I had a similar situation years ago. My ISPs server didn't carry all the groups I was a regular in, so I switched to one based in Berlin that was free at the time. It's now a pay service, but it's such a ridiculously small fee - I think 10 Euros a year, which was about $13 when I resubbed this year - that it was worth keeping. So even though I'm based in SoCal my post go through Germany.

I also use that one, but it doesn't carry a particular group I visit.

I am now have to run for a while to keep up with all this new/old information. No wonder that it becomes very hard to trace who comes from where. I with my simple mind, om totally twisted in knots. Typical yoga exercise....ha, ha. Mind twisters are harder than body twisters, but for me both start to become knots.....LOL
