Aside from the details of the exact connections, it looks like a round doily that had a little problem with increases at a couple of points near each other... so it got bigger and bigger there until it ruffled into another whole circle, and another. It's a beautiful effect from a pattern describing a leaf floating down a stream, or rather, a whole lot of leaves that manage to hit the same rock (every stitch represents a leaf, according to the article).

Now all we need to do is make the same shape, only with lacy leaf patterns worked into it. ;-) It should be possible.

Darn, another project.
