Crochet Martha's Poncho

I whipped up Martha's coming out of prison poncho and for the life of me it looked so small on me as compared to the model. Then I realized that the model is a very tiny person so all is well again. I hope my daughter likes it, it turned out pretty good. Going to do it again, in fact.

I am crocheting it again; this time in a nice wool yarn (instead of Red Heart Super Saver Worsted) that was very reasonable and very nice. I picked it up at a locally owned small chain of craft stores, Craft Warehouse (Pacific NW area USA). I have no idea if you get this at a location near you but it is worth checking out (IMHO). It is called Cascade Yarns, made in Peru 100% Peruvian Highland Wool. It is has a nice feel and stitches up soft.

Chris "who has to remember that most of these projects are for woman crocheters" so size does matter.

"Katherine" asked a the good question, "So did your daughter like it?" ============ No response as of yet, but it looks just like the poncho on the pattern and I know she liked that one.

================= That makes perfect sense...bulky weight yarn equals bigger garment...thanks

Then she should be pleased.

I made 2 of these using the Lion brand pattern and the Homespun with one. It turned out quite short, so I added another 3 rows (you have to add in 3's to make the scallop border correctly) and it was still short for me. Might have fit a 5'5" person. The next I made of Red Heart Symphony, a mohair type yarn, and added 6 rows. Better for a 5'8" tall person.

I made mine with Homespun and a Lion Brand N hook - their N hook is 10 mm, so it's 1 mm bigger than most other brands - and it turned out perfect, and I'm 5'9". The front point hits close to my knees, and the side edges are at my wrists, just where I wanted them. I didn't tweak the pattern at all. Maybe I crocheted it a bit looser than you, but it turned out fine.

I'm making another one for my sister using Homespun and a Boye N hook - I prefer metal hooks, and Boye is metal and Lion is plastic - and it's turning out a bit smaller. That's okay, though, 'cause she doesn't want it too long and she's a bit shorter than I am with shorter arms.

Since I totally missed the first mention of Martha's Poncho, could someone please post the URL where I can find the pattern/picture so I can check it out? Thank you!

Gem, the version I made is on Lion Brand's site

They have both knit and crochet versions; the pic is the crochet version and is what I made.

Bernat has another version, as does Lily Chin.
