Great Yarn Day

Thanks, Tamar. I should have thought of that. How does one tell before buying? (I know...if I can afford it, it's cheap and will pill... :(

Nora, I must have missed this when you first posted this. As you know, I love the Red Heart for the PL afghans and have been going to WalMart and Michael's which are about 15 minutes away. I looked up ACMoore's and there is one about an hour from here. I planned ahead last time and have enough yarn - varigated of course - for 3 afghans after I finish this one. Hugs, Joan

Probably. :-/ From what I hear, good silk is smooth, heavy, and tightly twisted unless you're going for unspun threads held together, just as they are off the cocoon. There is something called "grege" which I think is the short bits from cocoons that were allowed to hatch; it has short ends and I think is the kind that pills.

After hearing of someone's experience with coned silk yarn that was gluey and impossible to use, I have no idea what to recommend. When I went to WEBS in Massachusetts, they had lovely looking silk on cones at what were no doubt very reasonable prices for silk.

*sigh* I know there are people out there who knit with the good stuff and get wonderful results, but they are knitting on very tiny needles too.

The silk from which I am knitting a shawl doesn't seem to pill. It was purchased from

You know, that sounds familiar; I think I once read that if the silk is cheap, it'll have lots of short ends and the shine will not last. I had two silk sweater sets a few years ago that seemed like a real bargain but began pilling almost immediately. By the time they were out of style I didn't care because they looked so shabby.

Gluey? Yuck.
