Hesira has summed it up well. You can put as much time and effort into ir as you want. I doubt I will take pictures of my stash, I have recently destashed and it's organized enough for me to know what I have. I haven't posted any pics of FO's yet, mostly because I want to take better pics that I already have of them. Until now, I wasn't keeping track of my projects visually in an organized way. You can make it a social thing if you want, or you can use it as only a resource. Instead of googling and googling and googling to find out about projects, this is much more streamlined.

Although when I go to Projects, and see hundreds of people knitting the same pattern, my desire to knit that pattern diminishes, but that's one of my quirks :)

Also, as she pointed out, the invitation is based only on asking for one and waiting your turn in line.

Time will tell. It sounds like they have advertisers like Lion Brand and others who want to participate, and people who want to have been sending them donations to help carry on - they have not solicited them. Personally, I have no idea how they could quit their day jobs without money coming in from somewhere so they can eat.

They are getting set up on some monster server, and that's why they are only adding people at 1200 or so a week so the server doesn't crash. I'm assuming this big server will eliminate the bandwidth problem.

Once I'm able to sign in, I'll let everyone know what is going on. Shelagh

Thanks for the info...... for instance, one thing I'm interested in looking up is the Kauni cardigan. Not that I want to knit it - I'm wondering how different people are lining up the colours. I've also noted that the Yarn Harlot and the Rainey Sisters are both having some issues with it and am wanting to see if other people are having them too.

I've picked up a Flickr account in anticipation of Ravelry and have posted a few pictures just to try it out. However, I don't like their

200 pic limit on the free account, so will only use Flickr for my Ravelry pictures. Am thinking of trying Picasa for on-line photo albums, since Yahoo is closing down on October 18th. I'm just glad I only used Yahoo so others could see my pics, and not as a true storage facility.

I have over 1,000 pics in my Flickr account so far, Shelagh.

I did a quick scan of the Kauni and it looks like most people are not very far along on it, and I didn't find any mention of problems. There are a few completed ones that are gorgeous.

This is a good example of what I was saying. I did a search for Kauni on Flickr and got many hits that were not Kauni. Many people on Flickr don't use tags properly. When I did a search on Ravelry, all of the hits were of the sweater.

I got a paid Flickr account after having a couple of computers crash and pictures were lost. I know, I could back up. I know me and I know won't do it enough :)

From what I understand on the free account they only display the

200 most recent pictures. Your other ones are still there, but I'm not sure how you access them.

Picasa has pretty much unlimited storage, and so far, it's free.

Which is exactly what the rec.crafts.texiles hierarchy of newsgroups is as well.

I see. So they are trying to make a living by running that site. I guess that explains it.

I'm not familiar with patternreview. I just glanced at it, and it doesn't LOOK like Ravelry. Both sites probably share certain characteristics, but since I'm not on Ravelry yet, I'm not able to speak from experience.

I will certainly stay here regardless. I've made too many friends and gained too much from this group to abandon it.

I still have problems navigating web sites and have been on a few boards that got hacked into and seen other boards that are "aggressively moderated," and I just prefer to stay here. But that's not saying that nobody else should check it out. I'm just a cyber-Luddite. :)

It's a site that reviews sewing patterns. If you have made a pattern, you can post pix and a review of the pattern, and if you are thinking about making a pattern, you can read about what other people thought about it.

Yes good point....I still have a dial-up so if the page doesn't load in 30 seconds I get bored and move on.....movable type sites are the worst and not sure why they take so long to load.

I'm NOT advertising it - I was trying to DISCUSS it with people who are interested, particularly people who are already "members", and who know a lot more about it than I do, and certainly more than you do.

I have no idea if they're "making a living". I'm only going by what I've read on their blog where they say they quit their day jobs. Hesira and BB explained it far better than I could

You obviously aren't interested. No one is suggesting you sign up for Ravelry or leave here.

Sure, send me an email at jffcdab[at]verizon [dot]net and I will send you the links to apply for membership.....the main deal is you need an established yahoo mail account.

Absolutely, I don't see Ravelry as competition for established communities. Obviously none of us yet have access to be able to give a full account of the service but I certainly view it as an *additional* resource, not a one-stop-shop for my online knitting needs.

I've signed up because I'm keen to see it and judge it for myself - it may or may not suit me. I've heard plenty of positive things about it though so I'm approaching it in a positive frame of mind.

Ok, now I'm curious. Do my posts not show up in some places? I have wondered at times if that's the case, or if there are other reasons I get little response to my posts. I've practically stopped posting because of it.

VP, this is not directed at you specifically, but your post said nobody has access to Ravelry after I posted today that I have joined, so I thought it was a good time to see if I could find out.
