HOLIDAY WEEKEND

By the way, Canada does still have one day of fireworks celebrations... Canada Day on July 1st. That's nice with almost every community setting off fireworks, having picnic-type celebrations with bands playing music for all to enjoy. :o)

We used to know a family from Wales who lived on the edge of town with a nice field beside their home. They would also have a big bonfire celebration on Nov 4th for Guy Fawkes Day, with a party of food (and drinks too, of course) for all their friends. That was pretty neat. Unfortunately they moved away and no one does that around here now. The other Welsh people who still live in town don't have a big wide open space to do the huge bonfire.

That's interesting Gemini. Different countries celebrate different things on the same day and nothing seems to be international or agreed.

May 24th seems to be a Canadian "special" day and I found this on wiki. According to the legislation creating Victoria Day, Canada celebrates the Queen's official birthday that general holiday, the Monday on or before 24 May. However, it is not widely known that Victoria Day is intended to honour the current queen as well as Queen Victoria, who was born May 24, 1819. For Canadians, Victoria Day is often considered the beginning of summer, when theme parks and outdoor pools are opened, and other summer activities begin. The link is

's_Official_BirthdayThe Queen's actual birthday is 21st April but she also has an official birthday, as did her father. This is from the same page on Wikipedia -"In the United Kingdom, the Queen's Official Birthday is now celebrated on the first, second, or third Saturday in June (in 2006 it was the 17th) and is marked in London by the ceremony of Trooping the Colour, which is also known as the Queen's Birthday Parade. Edward VII (who reigned 1901?1910) moved the ceremony to that date in the hope of good weather".

I think he was a very sensible king to do that as there is some rather bad flooding in England at the moment - in fact "typical bank holiday weather" is what we usually say.

Guy Fawkes day is still celebrated on 5th November with bonfires and fireworks in the UK.

Thank you , In California they honored my father today. They put up a flag pole and dedicated a flag in his honor. My Father was a Lt. Col when he retired and ran the military retiree dept. at Edwards AFB until 6 months before he past away. Also from the wife of a military member, it means alot that people remember why this day came about originally as a day of decoration. Yours in stitches. Coggie
