I am back - AGAIN!

Welcome back Norma! :o) I hope your new computer does you a long time with no problems at all.

PS. Thank you for the email, I'll likely get around to answering it tomorrow sometime... things have been weird around here today and I don't want to have to think much. I'll be shutting down in a few minutes to go watch some mindless sitcoms or something, where I can be entertained without having to think through a plot.

Congrats on the new computer, Norma! Let me tell you about MY 'old one'.... it started life with windows 95, was upgraded to 98 2nd edition, then upgraded to ME. Wait, it's worse! I only had a TWO gig hard drive! We added a piggybacked two gig, so I had a total of four gigs, AND only 64 K of memory! My new one is 40 gigs and 256 k, and running XP 2nd. I'm THRILLED with it, and know you'll be happy with yours as well. Hugs, Noreen

I have found true file losses to be rare if you save as you go along.

In Word: Tools/Options/Save and set the AutoRecovery for every ____ number of minutes. I think default is 10. Above that on same tab, you'll see a check box for "Always create a backup copy." You can set it for 1 min if you are writing the Great American Novel.! As you probably know, if/when Word crashes and you restart it automatically looks for the file you were working on and opens it with as much as possible fully restored.

If your new computer is a Dell, they may well have set it loaded with a version of Word Perfect, check for a pen nip icon shortcut on the desktop. Word Perfect is better, I think, for backup. At least it's easier to find the files because you set where they go, which you probably can do for Word, as well, I just haven't looked into it. Tools/Settings/Document/Set the Timed Backup as for Word. Right above it is where you set the backup folder. And the files can zip back and forth with no problem, file conversion seems to have come of age.

What I really like is that you can start in Word and reopen in word Perfect and vice versa, if you want... I know that I'm going to 'date' myself AGAIN, but my fave was WordStar.... Noreen

Which is what we still use on this computer.

You betcha! I am self-taught -- aren't we all if we're over 35?! -- and I always pass along what I can if it seems useful.

Lucky you, Ray! If I could find a free or cheap application of it, I'd HAVE it! Noreen

If you have a floppy 3.5 " drive, here's a copy for $4.99

Wow, that's cheap enough! But NOW I now longer have a floppy drive, LOL! Thanks Jane! Hugs, Noreen

Addendum: I'm also not sure if the old WordStar would even be compatible with XP... but thanks for looking, Jane! Noreen

Well, this had better be the last time I have to type that! I have my new computer, and now I'm trying to get used to the changes. Hopefully, it won't take too long.

Are you?!?!? I'm a mere child of twenty-five! *cough* Jeesh, I almost choked! LOL Guess I can't say that anymore since Matthew will be 24 in August, huh? {{{SIGH}}}

Addendum: BTW, when I was just going on six, my mother told me she was sixteen. \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\

And my father tells everyone that he is 24. Of course, my oldest daughter is 29 and my son is 26, so how that could be possible is anyones' guess. LOL
