I'm back and FOs

Hi everyone!

I'm back from holiday vacations in Italy. We had our good portion of snow and ice (near to the sea) and had to remain inside for most of the time (snow removing equipment is almost not existing in my places). I used the time for finishing the never ending crib blanket and my mom added the ribbon all around with the sewing machine. DearNephew#1 was really delighted with the blanket for little brother due in february and couldn't stop caressing it with his (dirty) little fingers LOL I also finished the Russian scarf and weared it on January 1st, following the tradition according which everyone has to wear something new on the first day of the New Year.

Whish you all a happy New Year!

Hugs,

Anna Maria

When I, as a foreigner, think of Italy, I think of summer and sun.

When I think "going home" to my parents (who lived in a district in Norway, mostly known for summer and sea/sun bathing), I think of ice and snow and sitting inside,...... doing handwork! LOL!

It sounds strange, but the "summer paradise" is HOME even in winter time, and it is winter even in a "summer paradise"!

I think you have been very clever during your stay, Anna Maria, and welcome home to MORE winter!LOL! AUD ;-)

Italy in winter can be very cold and not only on the Alps (by the way, we had -32 C on the Alps past week). I had two light jackets with me, but they remainded in my luggage and I went around in the same clothes I use here in Stockholm. My Italian friends didn't want to believe me!

And Norway in summer can be very warm!

That's so true!

I like Swedish winter with snow! It gives light to our short daylight!

Hi Anna Maria,

Oh, that is so nice that Mom did the ribbon on the blanket. At least you know someone loved it, was he hinting that he wanted one too?

Hugs and glad to see you back.

Poor mom, she had her moments in trying to sew it with her old Singer pedal machine. Eventually she gave up and asked a good neighbour for her electric one.

I am very proud to say that he has a very generous nature and he really likes to give presents to everyone (at age 4), so he was delighted with getting presents for little brother (he is in charge for delivering them from auntie and uncle living in Sweden). When I told him that I had to buy a belt for my new jeans he disappeared and returned back with his dad's old belt. He gave it to me as a present LOL I will cherish it as a treasure... He even keeps saying that he is 5 years old, since 5 years old children have English classes at his kindergarden. He really wants to speak English and makes his own "English" words :-)))

hej those kids are good. i really feel good about my swedish when i can chat with the 4-5-6 year olds and get answers. and occasionaly i ask they if they can speak english and the say 'lite' [pronounced in englishe as leeta]. what fun and they are soooo cute.

and those kindergarten classes don't have snow days and miss school. i see them walking in pairs with teachers going to sled for sports or maybe swimming pool or library. all bundled up; look like they could roll there. but then in the ski tracks, they are awesome. have all the right moves and certainly outdo me

My daughter lives in Germany and her son (my grandson) speaks only German. He understands all English (he is 4 years old) but won't speak it. Recently she has told him that he needs to speak English so Granny and Grandpa can understand when he comes home to Scotland:) He has agreed so I hope he will do that. When he gets to big school (he is in kindergarten just now) he will be taught English, so I guess he will have a good start:)

Don't worry, Ophelia. It's a very common problem, but luckly enough a false one. I have seen dozens of parents living abroad getting mad in making children speak their language, but the problem solved by itself when children HAD to speak the language with friends and relatives from originary country. Children are smart and know when you understand them or not (why to speak in a way when you understand the other?) and adapt according to the situation. In a word, don't worry...

Thank you Anna Maria:)) He did very well here anyway without actually speaking English when he was much younger. Often he would come and chatter away to me. When he realised I didn't know what he was saying he would give a big sigh, take my hand, take me to whatever it was he wanted and then point:)) That wee boy is very smart, when his Mummy said he had to speak English for us he said the he would teach us German LOL. Mummy told him we are too old to learn it

We are on our way again, lets do the trip to Anna Maria on our broom stick, or will it be by Viking ship, maybe a Canadian canoe.....It must be the time of year to travel and visit one and other.

Children at that age will pick up another language very quickly. Our 5 year old grand daughter started in French immersion in September, and just soakes the french language up like a sponge. Still she is also picking up new English words and ideas as well.

Your grandson will do just fine.

I read somewere that kids learn to talk, by body language and sign language the mother communicates to her new baby
