I'm back! And Question

I know y'all missed me(no choking on the "who the heck is this weirdo"), I missed y'all. How's everybody been? Cher, Wooly, Noreen, Els, and everybody that I can't think of, y'all ok? I hope everyone is fine and there's been no bad news since September....

Does anyone know what a stout card is? I have been gifted an Alan Dart pattern that called for that and I have no clue. Thanks for the help, Chris

Chris,

Do you mean stout cord?

Dennis - I just checked one of the patterns and it says stout card. I think it might mean cardboard but I am not sure. Since it is an Alan Dart/Sirdar pattern, I assumed it was a "British" knitting term and I knew that this group had the best people to ask. Chris

I should think it must mean a thickish card to be used as a base for a toy or model. If I was going to make something like that (have to be a very special gift) and it might need washing ever I think I'd use that plastic grid stuff you can cross stitch/embroider on. (Can't think of the name right now) If you cut it to shape and file any sharp edges away so they don't cut the yarn it would at least make the item washable. I have a horrid picture in my mind of a soggy mess of card. HTH Love & higs Christine (who isn't sure it's a totally British term, but agrees it sounds like a fat greeting missive)

Hi Chris, welcome back!

Now I am only guessing! (I don't know what your pattern is for ;-) YOU and all the others... just tell me if I am wrong,I might be "far off"..!!!

BUT you know as Norwegian, I OFTEN have to search for the meaning of english or american words! First I think: STOUT... is a tasty beer. And there is something I would call "beer cards"(coasters) ...made from cartoon, "stiff" cartoon (if you bend it ,it will not bow, it will break) ... cartoon can be called board and CARDboard.

May be STOUT CARD is a sort of cartoon which is as thick as a beer coaster?

I went to "Ask Jewis" and came up with a site where something was explaiened so someone: "Stout Card or thin wood, or styroform can also be used"

On a google page, I found: "All A5 photographs are printed on Stout Card".

My Guess: "Stiff" Cartoon.

... and now Chris, I am wondering what you are going to make! If it's lacy gloves, I am completely wrong, but may be if it is toys???

Thanks for all the welcome backs!!! I re-scaned the pattern and it is using the stout card as the base of the toys feet. Sounds like cardboard to me, but since these are toys, I'll probably use Plastic Canvas or thin pieces of plastic so that they can be washed. I do appreciate all the advice and the welcome backs!
