Elizabeth Zimmermann used to knit while riding on the back of her husband's motorcycle. He didn't know about it until a trucker started laughing and pointing her out to his buddy. She used it at the beginning of her video, "Knitting Without a License".

While stopped at a light on a multi-lane boulevard, I saw a man watching a football game on a mini-TV held between his thumbs and the top of the steering wheel. Saw a woman marking a ditto sheet that looked like kid's homework while merging onto the DC beltway with a van loaded with kids. Had to dodge her. She almost merged through me.

Coming out of Super Store, in Duncan, standing on the sidewalk waiting for Otto to pick me up, I heard a baby crying. Looking over, I saw a large Van parked at the curb. I small boy sat in the drivers seat and was playing with the electrically driven windows. Since the windows are tinted you can't really see in. I wandered over and peeked inside. The small boy and the little baby in the back seat were the only ones in the car. Not only that, the mother had left the key in the ignition. I went back inside and told one of the girls at the service desk, that she better do somthing about it. She came out and comfirmed my story. At that point Otto arrived. Just as well, I would have told the driver off in no uncertain terms, I was that indignant. My neighbour who was a cashier in one of the supermarkets here, told me that it is not uncommon at all for mothers, or fathers to do that. Amazingly stupid.

In UK it is illegal to use a cellphone while driving. One woman was prosecuted for holding an apple in one hand while driving.

What I don't understand is why it is not illegal to smoke cigarettes while they are driving too.

I was driving home from the city one day when Matthew was small, and the car in front of me was swaying all over the road. First it would hit the gravel on the shoulder of the road, then it would swing over to the passing lane (thankfully we were on one of the larger highways and not having to deal with oncoming traffic). This went on and on for a good 15 minutes before I finally timed it just right and passed him when he was starting his swing to the gravel on the shoulder of the road. As I drove by I looked in and saw this business man type driving along not even looking at the road at all, but instead he was very interested in the novel he was reading.

The most recent one was a couple of weeks ago when we were heading to the city so Matthew could go to work and I could go to the doctor. The car in front of us again was all over the road, only this time we were on a regular road that had oncoming traffic. We didn't have to pass her to see what she was doing, we could see it through the back window of her car... she was applying makeup and fixing her hair WHILE talking on her cell-phone. It just boggles the mind what people are thinking when they do these stupid things. Yes she'll look good, but for what.... her appointment, a hot date, lunch with friends, a meeting with her kids teacher, or for her own funeral?

It's illegal to use a cellphone here too; and yes, you aren't supposed to eat or drink while driving here either.... but you see it all the time.

There are so many outlawed places for smoking here in Ontario now, the smokers would throw a fit if they stopped them from smoking in their own vehicles. Besides... I've seen police smoking in their cruisers... eating and drinking coffee too, come to think of it. But then, there seems to be a whole other set of rules for them than for regular citizens... afterall you see them speeding down the road passing everyone when they don't have their sirens on or even their lights flashing. Not that I don't appreciate the work they do... but I think some of them figure some of the laws don't really apply to them.

You know what's really bad about most (not all) people who smoke in their cars... aside from not having both hands on the steering wheel. When they're finished with their cigarette they fling it out the window. That really ticks me off a lot!! I used to be a smoker years ago, but I never threw a cigarette out of a car window where it could easily go into someone else's car window (I've heard of this happening), or hit a pedestrian, or a bird or animal could be injured from it as well.
