knitting journal

I just started my first page today. Knitting socks successfully requires either doing two at the same time or keeping notes about the first one. Plus, with a yarn sample, photograph and label, I should be able to answer any questions that a gift recipient might have. And, if I wanted to, I could make another pair just like the first.

I found this blog with pdf's of sample pages. I bought cardstock and a loose leaf binder, plus plastic sheet covers, to start getting more organized.

Does anyone keep a knitting journal--a notebook with photos of completed projects with notes, etc? I was thinking of keeping one, especially since I've been doing so much yarn dyeing. I wanted to write down my yarn dye recipes, put pictures in and notes about the project and samples of the yarns used. Anyone else out there do this?

I kept one years ago, long before the internet. I've sought and found a few things in it--mainly a hat pattern (because I can't seem to hold onto my hat for more than 2 years), and something my sister wanted (can't remember what). I think I don't use it more because aside from socks, I never want to knit the same thing twice. I still keep the patterns, with notes, in my knitting bag, or on my computer, but I don't love filing...

Hi Karlisa,

I think of my blog as my knitting journal. I sometimes include nonknitting stuff, but I can keep up with my projects, stash acquistions, etc., by semi-regular posting.

I keep thinking I should keep a hard copy journal, but I haven't gotten around to it.

I keep threatening to do this. But I never get around to it. Sigh! And Keith even bought me a special knitters' journal to use. Bad Katherine!

I have been keeping a crafts journal (spinning, knitting, crochet, quilting since 1984, with several years skipped in the middle. It isn't pictures etc. so much as just a list of all the things I have made/worked on/abandoned over the years. It is fun to look back and remember what I have done. At the end of each year I make a list of finished projects and UFO's. I generally run about a dozen of each every year, although some of the UFO's have been carried over from year to year. (Argggghhhhh - I just checked how old my oldest UFO's are and it's been over a decade since I started a couple of them. Sigh)

BTW. I am new to this list. Hello everyone.

Welcome Betsy!

I have an embarrassing amount of UFOs in my sewing room, mostly sewing stuff, but quite a few knitting projects, too. I'm in denial about them and I keep the door closed to the room so I don't have to think about it. :-)

Yeah, I toyed with the idea of recording in a blog, but I started one a while back and ended up never using it. I guess I like being able to hold a book and seeing it in the house is a better reminder for me to use it. I do like reading others' blogs, though! And I wish someone would revive "You Knit What???" That was a guilty pleasure of mine. :-D

I keep track of my finished items monthly in a dollar store journal. I also have pictures of some of my finished projects and WIP's on my Yahoo album, (but Yahoo's closing their picture service), and now am posting them on Ravelry (with the pictures being hosted on Flickr). Now that I've had a chance to compare Flickr with the Yahoo photo service, I can say for certainty I don't like Flickr. For my purposes, Yahoo's photo service worked much better, so BOOO to Yahoo for closing it.

Wow! I've never kept a craft journal but I've taken pictures of things I've made over the years ... maybe it's time to start keeping one. Never too late, right?

Yes Murielle it was/is a very good question , and one may ponder about it ,, My copybooks don`t have photos , only a drawn sketch , usually with measurements noted at the appropriate places ,,, mirjam

Absolutely! Most of what I make is for gifts or charity, so I always take photos and keep any notes, yarn labels, etc., as a memento. And to use for reference later.
