Moebious

I would like to knit a moebious, but I do not understand why the directions tell you to cast on half of the stitches and then pick up from those stitches for the second half. Is it not possible to cast on all the stitches and then join the first and last stitches?

Try it both ways using 20 or 30 stitches. One way produces a moebius with a 180-degree twist, the other doesn't. There's a reason the instructions are written the way they are...

That's how I've always done it.

You can, as long as you remember to put a twist on the joining, OR, knit the whole piece, lay it out on a table, pick up one end, put the top of this end at the bottom of the other end, and sew it by hand. But it is much easier to pick up the last half of the stitches from the bottom of the stitches that you just knit. I hope this is clearer than mud. Try

Elizabeth Zimmerman , taught American ladies to knit a strip of knitting with a double sided relief pattern ,,,,[ for example all knit ] , than take the 2 short edges turn one 180 * and sew with invisible seam ,,, i found that this kind streches with time ,, the one where you cast on half the stitches than cast the other on the bottom makes this into the Center of the ring and youcan later decide on the width, It stays much neater , to my experience ,,, mirjam

Yes, you can. In Cat Bordhi's Magical knitting books, she gives directions for doing a continous cast on. It's similar to one of the provisional castons only you're using the cord of the circular needle instead of waste yarn. There's also an explanation of it on Knitty Gritty from the show she was on, as well as a pattern.

Her 'Treasury of Magical Knitting' is a wonderful book and the cast on instructions are pretty straightforward.

I have found her books at Beverly's and my local knit shop. I'm in the process of finishing up one made out of Paton's SWS, which works up nicely on number 15 needles.

Next I'm going to try one of her 'Socks Soar on Two Circular Needles' patterns.
