I sure as heck don't belong to my parents, and my kids don't belong to me. I see my job as being to raise them to be smart and have values so that by the time they're adults I'll trust them to make all their own decisions well, even if they're not the exact same decisions I would have made. If I still think they're doing it all wrong and need me to run their lives when they're adults, I'll be ashamed of myself because it was my job to make sure that didn't happen.

Obyarn, my seven year old son, my eldest, asked me to teach him to knit the other day. I must be a lousy teacher because he struggled to get the right loops off the needles and keep the right loops on, it always seemed to be the other way about, and after a while we both lost patience and agreed amicably to try another time.

No, no... I didn't think you were critizing me! :o) I just explained what had happened. Of course if I had stopped to think that my Mom or later that my son would have been so upset by it, I would have thought twice about it. Especially considering the fact that both times I did it, even I felt sick about it afterward. There are many times that I wish that I had never cut my hair and just trimmed what needed to be trimmed.

My oldest sister had a very bad habit of telling me that I was "too old" to be wearing my hair long. I think (and my Mom even told me too) that she was just jealous that her hair wasn't the type that would look good long. Whenever she would start harping on at me about "you're not a teenager anymore, you really shouldn't be keeping your hair long like that" I would say "Do I ever ask you to look after it for me? And if I'm 'too old' to wear my hair long.... what about Crystal Gayle (American country singer) and her hair that touches her ankles? She's older than I am... is she too old too? It's my hair, and I'll wear it any way that I like, whether you like it or not." It would shut my sister up for a while... until the next time she came to visit... then she'd start up again. Some people just don't take the hint to butt out of other people's lives!

LOL My Mom would use the "guilt trip" thing on me from time to time too... not about my hair, but about other things. Her favourite line was "One of these days I won't be here, THEN you'll be sorry!" Although she was joking, for the most part... she was right... she isn't here, and I AM sorry! I miss her all the time! :o/

Oh my! My parents would definitely never do such a thing to me either. That is terrible!

I used to joke with Matthew (when he had his hair halfway down his back, and I loved it) that it was *my* hair because he was *my* son! But when the time came that he made the choice that he wanted it cut.... even though I was choking, I got the scissors out and cut it for him. He went from one extreme to the other.... from mid-back to brushcut... what a change and a shock! hehehe He keeps it short now, but not *quite* that short anymore... and he tends to allow it to grow out a little (along with his facial hair) during the winter months, to keep a little warmer. :o)

I'm sure she does! To my mind her mother's behaviour constitutes assault and should not have been tolerated. Your friend was a grown woman and entitled to shave her head if she felt like it.

No-one is the property of anyone else and using emotional blackmail and manipulation is no way to treat anyone.

Hi Eimear, you are right but don't forget the thing happened almost forty years ago. Different people, different ways . They had had a war, their country had been invaded and the world they knew had been destroyed, not yet totally rebuilt and things wouldn't be the same anymore for them. Some people were afraid of things changing, they already had too much changing for their own taste. And the blackmail you are referring to, didn't mean what you think. My parents were the best. They did so many things to please me, I could do something to please them. What is a bit of trouble with a bit of hair compared to the enormous amount of TLC (Tender Loving Care) they gave me ,don't you agree????? Lighten up, people are not made of crystal, at least I'm not :-)
