Paperclips and bobbipins work for this also. For stitch markers I use jump rings (jewelery-making stuffs) that come 100 to a bag for less than a dollar; when I was in braces I found the alignment rubberbands to be more useful as stitch markers and slingshots than for their intended purpose.

That being said, I do have some proper stitch markers, but I don't often use them as I find them to be large and "sticky" when I slide them along the needles. I carry around a packet for friends who discover they need a marker but can't imagine using something as tacky as a jump ring :D

The markers on my NYCO are pieces I cut off of two different colored drinking straws (new from the box). They would not work on very large needles but they work on this project.

I don`t use it as markers , mine are looped embroidery threads ,,,, i used it instead of a safety pin to hold stiches that had to come off the needle , mirjam

Mirjam, I, too wear my hair pinned up out of the way. I have frequently resorted to a hairpin, expecially when I am away from home or do not want to get out of my chair. As well as acting as a temporary stitch holder, hairgrips (bobby pins in the U.S.) also make excellent emergency cable needles, and, if I have to do, say, four rows then change, a hairpin hung on the end of the row makes it easy to count. Of course, technically, I have craft pins, cable needle, stitch markers, crochet hook, yarn needle, tape measure, folding scissors, emory board and Bandaids etc. in a little bag which is supposed to live in my knitting bag, but if I have just grabbed up a piece of work to take with me and forgotten to put the accessory bag in the tote I am carrying - Oh well, necessity is the mother of invention.

Olwyn Mary , i wore my hair years Up , than when i was 40 and in the Usa i started to wear it down and when i became 60 , and summer was SOOOOOO hot , i started to pin it up again ... Of course we use every thing for knitting ,, when we need to ,,, mirjam
