OT - but important...

Gem, Cranberry juice is excellent, especially for women. Highly recommended by doctors and naturalists alike.

It grows out here in Jamaica all over the place. It is sweet, tastes great. It's round and green in colour and filled to the brim with seeds. The seeds are surrounded are each surrounded by its own juice pouch (if you want to call it that) which are pink. When you open up the pomegranite it looks like thousands of pink diamonds just staring at you. Its about as big as a tennis ball. Grows in my Granmom's backyard, many pleasant childhood memories (and unpleasant Grandmom used to whip us with the branches - very thin - stings like nothing else).

Bye now, Julie-Ann Jamaica, West Indies

Hi everyone! I know this is a mess. One extra huge mess. But here comes anyway.... As you may know by now, Operation Snail Mail Address is complete and I am living alone now. Some time ago I got a flu. There is only one option when it strikes. It is antibiotics. Oh yes. I know this flu thing is a virus thing but I need certain kind of antibiotics to get rid of it. Well, when Dad came to visit I told him to pick me up those strong things. He did, and oh boy...my stomach...it went crazy! I took only 1 pill in 2 halves...and boy oh boy did I feel it! My stomach begun to twist and turn right away. My poor stomach. It hates those strong medicines...but sometimes I have no option. Well, couple of days went like this: awake 5 minutes, asleep 15 minutes or 30 minutes, awake 5 or 10 minutes, back to sleep for who knows how long time. And dizziness and nauseous feeling. Then I woke up at night and felt a little bit better. "I coud watch some chat" I thought and went to the living room. But no way, the tiredness got the best of me and I fell asleep again, this time to sofa. And guess what I used to cover myself? Oh yes, the very blanket *you wonderful friends of mine* had made me secretly! Oh yes. I had my clothes on and that blanket...and I felt warm. I really did!!!!!!!!!! Can not explain but I felt just good when I was able to rest. But it really felt great to sleep under that lovely blanket. Honestly! Now I have typed way too much...but I can tell you yet that my health is improving...and I hope I will be OK soon. But the nauseous feeling comes and goes...antibiotics do that from time to time...if I take them without eating. Best: Pirjo

well, heck, Julie-Ann, are you a knitter? I've not seen you here before! Is Jamaica as wonderful as I've heard? I live in central Tennesse, USA, about seventy miles from 'music-city' Nashville. Oh, there's another name for 'ugly-fruit'.. I just cannot think of it, but I've always enjoyed it! Welcome to RCTY, btw! Noreen

Hi Julie-Ann, welcome to the newsgroup! :o)

So how do you eat pomegranites? Just bite into them, peelings and all... or peel them and scoop out the seeds to eat whatever is left? Or do you eat the seeds too? As you can see, I really don't have a clue how to eat them. I've seen them in the stores, but because I don't know anyone (in person) who has eaten them, I don't have a clue about them.

I'd be kind of interested in trying the Star Fruit too, but once again, I don't have any idea how you're supposed to eat them.

Peace! Gemini

And, Noreen... what is Ugly Fruit?

Eating a pomegranate. I just love them. You take a sharp knife and cut the skin in quarters, from top down, cutting only into the skin, not the fruit. (Or you can just cut it in quarters and lose a few of the seeds). Peel it down and you will see the "rubies" nestled in some white stuff like styrofoam. Just pick the seeds out of the white stuff and eat them. Very tart/sweet and juicey! Yum. I only see them for sale around here in mid-winter. I have a pomegranate "tree", but I am right on the edge of the proper planting zone, so it doesn't do too well. It is just a shrub, and it has never gotten any flowers or fruit. Well, maybe with global warming upon us, I will soon get pomegranates. Kira

Julie Ann Welcome ,,,Gemini Julie-Ann gave a Nice desription of the PomeGrande ,, which is also called granade Apple. And in Hebrew RIMON , [it`s Latin name is Punica]. Best way to eat it is slice it in the middle than do 2 cuts to loosen the Hard peel. than you take off each soft `tissue` peel , uncover the red [or pink depends on the type] pearly seeds and sort of push them softly into a bowl DO NOT eat Nore taste the Soft tissue it is Bitter.

Ps wear an apron the juice makes unwashable stains. If you eat Too much you might need to eat dates or other loosening fruits, as the Pomegranade being Full with IRON , does the same stoppage iron peels do . I eat them as is with a spoon, some people prffer to add sugar ?????? I also like them added to Kiwi , Bananna , Or to my Salad of , Orangres /salad leaves and onions. Or just with Yogurt. A friend of mine makes wine from them... anyway i have a whole tree to eat ,share with friends , and infactt , i see several Luminous red Pommegrandes hanging at the top of the tree .... .ps i have to fight with the birds , and with [fruit] rats. the birds i don`t mind much, they open one and eat it till it`s empty, the fruit rats just walk up the tree and nibble at many and just let them rot ,,[ rotten rats!!!] The tree is a native to Israel , is mentioned in the Bible [Old Testament] , and quite native to Mount Carmel [ on which i live] , it Doesn`t need much water. looks more like a Big Bush , Sheds it`s little green leaves in winter, and when he renews them they are red for several days, Flowers are Neat too they are red , and look a bit like little carnations. the juice is a bit like red wine, tangy you sort of can Bite it ,,, mirjam

Gemini, Thank you for both these links. I found them very interesting - especially ,as you said, following the discovery of a vaccine for the prevention of the virus that causes cervical cancer. God Bless Gwen

Gemini, I did hear once that the kernel of the apricot is poisonous - but if it is , it certainly did not harm a little dog we had ! She used to crunch the stone and consume the kernel of any apricot she could lay her paws on !

Then there are the people of Napal - or somewhere up in that region- where it is said a very large number live many years over a hundred and they attribute that longevity to the fact that they eat masses of apricots. God Bless Gwen

Thank you for your description and instructions on how to go about eating pomegranites. Some day when I have some extra cash (still waiting for Matthew's Unemployment to kick in, as my money doesn't come until the end of the month... in time for the mortgage) and feel like trying something new, I will give pomegranites a try. :o)

Peace! Gemini

Ahh, I do like apricots... but I think I'll pass on eating the kernel inside the stone.

Funny how some dogs (or other animals) take a liking to something that we find odd, huh? ;o)

Yum, I love pomegranates! We don't get them very often because they are very expensive around here (and certainly not native!) but I like to use the seeds in salad dressings. They add a nice tart crunch as well as their beautiful color. Has anyone tried dying with them?

As for star fruit, you can just slice and eat. Some people eat the peel, others just sort of peel it off each slice as they go. I have found that they are better to look at than to taste. They keep showing up around here though, so presumably there are others who don't feel that way!
