Serious Statement - long but important

After I had come down from cloud 10 or more, I went back to the Amazon page, as I thought it looked different. Sure enough, it was, there was now one actually for sale. I went to that site. I was very upset that the Book Depository site was quoting a price less than I have told you - my friends here on RCTQ. I was sent a parcel of books, in advance of royalties. I thought I would take the advantage to let friends and colleagues have the book at less than the cover price. I did not know that retail outlets would be getting them for less than my equivalent price. So, I cut my price a bit from the cover price, and added the actual postage charge. I presume that the Book Depository has some kind of deal with a shipping organisation, as I couldn't get anywhere near to their price - even surface mail. I feel truly terrible about this. I will e-mail those who have asked me for a book. I won't be able to match the Book Depository price, but I'll try to do something. I feel that I have been made to look like a profiteering villain, albeit unwittingly. Please believe me that I would never do anything that even hinted at dishonesty or sharp practice.

I hate cluttering up the NG with another message concerning my book. But, I felt I had to explain to you. This message doesn't need replies to clog up the newsgroup. I'll try to sort things out from here.

Patti, Patti, Patti. Of course the big guys are going to be able to undersell you. That's the way the world turns, luv. We love you, you love us. And that's the RCTQ turns. No one on this group could possible see you as a - how did you put it - a profiteering villain. Now you just stop fretting right this minute. 'K?

Actually, Patti, I went to Amazon looking for your book and I found that BD carries it yesterday. But I didn't buy it from them because they have a not-so-stellar reputation (I read the feedback given to them by customers).

So, I would look at it this way: you may have "charged" a teeny bit more than they do, but your reputation IS stellar! And hopefully, you were kind enough to sign the books - which, I'm sure BD can't do!! :)

And what is more excitin'? Gettin' a book from a REAL live author? Or from a discount bookseller??

I rest my case. :)

Hugs!! Connie :)

I'm glad you posted about this. I have often wondered why the listed price at online book stores was lower than the price at an author's web site. Now I know why. Debra in VA See my quilts at

please Pat, don't beat yourself up about this, we wouldn't have your signature in our books - Book Depository is a good seller and I usually use them, but nothing can beat a copy signed and sent by the author!!! I took mine to my Thursday afternoon group and our teacher is going to buy a copy from WHSmiths with her book token that we gave her!!! I feel really priviledged, so don't fret and I would be offended if I had a refund, honestly. I don't know how others feel, can I guess that others feel the same?

I disagree with you, Pat. I think replies are completely appropriate, as we all know you far too well to think that you'd even consider profiting from anyone here. The "big box" stores can afford to sell for less, since they buy in bulk for less. You were given your copies at the regular retail price (as compensation for royalties); you did nothing wrong.

As an aside, I thought my review would be the first for your book on Amazon, but I see that Tutu beat me to the punch.

Howdy!

Relax, Patti/Pat. We're so excited for you and your book, and it would certainly be our choice of how, where, when to buy it. Getting it from The AUTHOR means an autograph, right? And you'd be spending your time & travel on shipping & handling. I figure it evens out in the end. We know you're no pirate so put the eye patch & the parrot back where they were. Those of us who are usually the first to scream & point fingers at "profiteering villains" are just waiting for our chance to add your Geometrical Quilts to our book shelves. ;-) (I understand & appreciate your concern.)

Cheers & Best Wishes on the book (Geometrical Quilts)!

Patti: We know you much too well to even dream that you would be a villain!! We realize that the big stores out sell the little guys ... even if they happen to be tall women! Now, please, go enjoy a nice cuppa something and forget that idea. Hugs, PAT in VA/USA

OK I don't even know what this book is about, but if it is from one of the RCTQ members I want one and don't know hot to get it from Patti because I want mine signed too, and if it costs me more bucks that's fine with me. Gotta support our own.

Hi to the group, BTW, been busy with dad and haven't had time to read or post.

Miss you folks and Patti Please let me know how I can send you money for the book.

Bigger sellers have more power, Amazon is both good and bad, good because we can get books we wouldn't otherwise be able to get, bad because books we could get easily at a small local seller (or author) are cheaper. There is no way I will agree to pay you less than you originally offered.

A bit behind in reading today, and everyone has said it all for me Pat, and again and again.

Mine is gold-plated as far as I'm concerned.

I feel too emotional to reply to each of you - I wish I could. I still keep crying a bit when I think of this morning's shock, and re-read your messages; and lovely e-mails, too.

I am so grateful to each and everyone of you who, in your own special way, have reassured me about this. I hope I will someday be able to do something to help someone (s) here as you have helped me - in something as important as this was to me. For seven years I have blessed being part of this group. I will never forget this kindness.

Now I'm getting weepy too!

You've given so much advice, encouragement and friendship to everyone over the years, that of course we all think of you affectionately as our friend.

You aren't just a name on the end of a posting, you know!
