OT - Heading off to the city

Going to meet up with Matthew for the afternoon. There are a couple of meetings we need to attend to, and then there are a couple of places that he heard about (not on a bus line) where I am going to drive him to apply for work.

Be back later!

Back... Matthew and I did what we needed to do and then parked by the river for a while just talking and laughing. I had some comical things to tell him about my nephew who lives in town who I visited for about an hour yesterday. We had a good time together today!

By the way... I don't mean to sound totally insensitive or anything... but I've been spending so much time on the computer over the last week that I haven't really been watching the news, so I don't know the answer. While we were sitting at the river, we looked across and the flags on the American side were at half mast. Did someone in the government pass away that I didn't hear about?

Gem, they may have been lowered for Rosa Parks, who died about a week or so ago, and was just buried in Detroit. (She is the woman who refused to give up her seat on the bus, and started the civil rights movement.)

Ahhh, that makes perfect sense then..... the city we were looking at across the river is Port Huron Michigan.... upriver from Detroit. I had heard of her many years ago, of course. For some reason though, I thought that she was from the south... no?

Thank you for filling me in. I *did* think of her when we saw the flags at half mast, but I wondered, because often (not always, thankfully) the flags are only lowered for government officials.

Gem, you're right, it was in Alabama that it happened. They had a service for her in Alabama, then her body was taken to the Rotunda of the US Capitol for public viewing (I think she was the first woman given that honor), and then back to Detroit where she had been living for many years when she left Alabama.

Since you were looking at Michigan, that was most likely the reason. I think I heard on tv that the flags were to be lowered in her honor.

Ahh, thank you, Rusty! I can understand why the honor has been bestowed upon such a brave lady. She stood up for her rights, and led the way for many others. :o)

- good idea about putting USA on your signature. It used to be once upon a time that our provinces were abbreviated to 3 letters or more.... except for a few like BC, NB, NS.... now every province and state seems to be abbreviated to 2 letters. When I send a snail mail letter, or give my address to someone, I *always* put ONT on it... or even Ontario right out. I don't like ON and I'm not going to use it.

Thank you, I'm glad you're enjoying it. :o) Will you be joining the rest in the album? If so, don't forget to send a jpg to gemsawriter AT yahoo DOT ca and put "RCTY Friends" in the subject line and sign the note part with the name people know you as on here. ;o)

I will get myself on there, when I can find the right disk where the picture is. You wouldn't believe the TON (slight exaggeration of weight) of them we have... that I was using to try to save everything from the old computer before it died completely. What a pain that was too... the stupid thing kept freezing on me after only five to ten (when I was lucky) minutes. Never did get everything saved before Matthew bought this one, and some of the things were too big to put on a disk, even zipped. One of these days, we'll manage to connect the two and *try* to send the rest from the old computer to the new one.

In the meanwhile.... I try to look through quite a few disks each day to see if I can find the picture of myself to put in the photo album.

Hey, Gem; If you can get the old computer hooked up online, you could always send the pictures to a Gmail account, disconnect the old computer, re-connect the new one, and go get them off Gmail and burn them on CDs. Just a thought.

And a very good thought too. Unfortunately the old computer (even if it were sitting right beside me, which it isn't.... Matthew stored it upstairs for now) freezes up between 5 and 10 minutes at the most after being turned on... so I'm not even sure it would stay on long enough to get online.

When we do bring it back downstairs (I am not doing it, so don't everyone jump on me) I will get inside and give it a bit of a dusting out, and wiggle a few of the connectors around a bit, and see if that will help it to stay up for a little while longer. If so, then I'll give your suggestion a try! Meanwhile, I have sent your suggestion off to my email to keep for future reference. Thank you! :o)
