OT - Long Shot

I am trying to 'put a name' to a needlework craft that I had seen some time ago. It used - usually - a white loose weave fabric or base. The you took thread?? and either wound or knotted or looped or something through the base to create a picture, or name on the base.

This looks a lot like crochet pieces that I've seen done but it used some type of needle -- I think.

I know this is a long shot but I bet someone out there has a piece hanging in their house that a realtive did for them and maybe they know what the technique is called so I can at least 'google' something.

Thanks Carol

If you have no luck here you can always try to needlework newsgroup, they may have some ideas.
