OT - Where is George ?

A few days ago I noticed one of my dollar bills (USA) was stamped in red, and looking closer I saw the stamp said to go to

formatting link

I did, and found that it's a website that is called 'US Currency Tracking Project'. I put the serial number of my bill in, and found that it had been in Manchester, CT on Nov. 2nd, and that the last person had received it in his change from Dunkin Donuts.

I added a note that I had gotten the bill in change from either Dunkin Donuts or McDonald's. It was an interesting site.

If you get a bill with a red stamp on it - it's not very large, about

1/2" x 2" - see if it's part of this project.

I've seen those bills a couple of times but not until it was too late to look up the number. In both cases, I didn't notice the red stamp until I was handing it to a clerk to buy something with the bill.

Not to be a party pooper, but... isn't is illegal to mark US currency? I thought banks turned marked bills IN, to be be reissued... JM2C Noreen

Could be, but the "Where's George?" site has been around for quite awhile. I remember getting an email about it at least 3 years ago. Interesting that you see so many bills written on if it's illegal. I even remember getting one once that had a name and phone number on it! YIKES!

I got a bill like that once and entered the info at their site, but kept forgetting to go back and see where the bill went after I spent it.

It's sort of like Bookcrossing.com in that people have to want to participate, i.e. enter info after they receive the dollar bill.

Hey Jenn, how did you make the cent sign? It's nowhere on my keyboard. I know how to make the copyright sign.... alt 0169 , and I *used* to know how to make some other things too, but I forgot now. Is there a website that has all that information on it, do you know? That would be a handy site to have on hand when you need it. :o)

go to Start, to Programs, to Accessories, to System Tools, to Character Map. then you can copy the odd characters & paste into your mail, news or wherever you're writing on the computer (some programs will let you drag the selected characters in). if it's a character you'll want to use a lot, look on the bottom of the character map window when your character is selected & it gives the keyboard shortcut. lee

You've already gotten some responses, but just a note: you have to use the keypad for the numbers. Using the numbers across the top of the keyboard won't work. I use Alt+0162.

umm, because I have a laptop. Noreen

Well, it might work with the numbers across the top if that's the case. The worst that can happen is that you try it and it doesn't work. :o)

Good luck! Jenn

Ah, I see. I did not realize that a laptop didn't have a number pad.

Well, some *do*... the newer widescreen ones allow a bigger typepad surface. Also, one *can* get an 'external' numberpad. Hugs, Noreen
