Question about binding off for neckline

I've finished the right side of my baby sweater, and now the instructions say to bind off four stitches to begin the neckline. I understand how to bind off, but when the instructions say 'four stitches', I'm confused. Since you knit or purl two stitches, then by binding off those two stitches, you now have one bound-off stitch. So do they mean bind off four times, which would mean you have reduced the row by five stitches? Or do they mean bind off three times, with four bound-off stitches? Do I make sense? I don't want to have to rip out later, so I want to get this done correctly the first time. So far the sweater is looking good. Thanks you for any help.

Take the first two stitches. You knit both, then bind one off. That's one bind-off. Do it four times. You have the fifth stitch still on the needle, and that is the new first stitch. You only reduce the row by one stitch per bind-off action.
