Quick 'short-row' question (knitting)

I'm definitely losing it.... and feel extremely 'dumb'... but, I've got a neat pattern for a shawl that uses short-rows, and I'm confused regarding the 'instructions'...

Row 1 & 2: Knit 4, yo, knit to last 2 stitches, turn and knit 2, place marker, knit to end.

OKAY, my question on 'that' is, do I do that twice, actually making 4 rows, or once, which IS two rows?

Then it goes on with various instructions for Rows 3-8, Row 9 & 10, Rows 11-18, Row 19 & 20, Rows 21-28, Row 29 & 30... THEN says,

continue in pattern as set... (well, there are no brackets, so do I continue with rows 1&2) knitting 2 stitches fewer every even row until Row 110, bind off4, knit across all stitches, this completes one wedge. Repeat rows 1 - 110 five more times, to make a total of

6 wedges.

And my 'confusion' *there* is 30 does not go into 110... so what am I reading wrong.

TIA, Noreen hanging head....

I did a short row purse made out of wedges, and in my case Row 1 & 2 means just that. You will NOT be making 4 rows.

As to the continue in pattern as set, again, in my case it meant always doing two stitches less in every other row.

The purse is at

I was doing 10wedges per side, per purse to get the shape you see there. My guess is yourshawl is a half circle? Does the yo make a decorative spot on the piece?Abi

Abi, thanks for the QUICK heads-up. Yes, the shawl is sorta semi-circular, its the one on the Helen's Lace wrapper.... Patternworks catalogue has a pic.... I was PRETTY SURE Row 1 & 2 meant that IS the two rows... YES, it helps, a LOT! Hugs, Noreen

And very easy! Even the medium size is pretty big. I think it would be fun to do in scrap yarns and make each wedge different.

I must say I am impressed about what you make! Purse, Gallagher, and a shawl in a semi cirkulas shape, Noreen! I try, Noreen, but I do not understand what you ask about!!LOL!

I do it the "Norwegian way" with coloures and pattern, but I think I have to sit down and learn a bit more!

I have got the newsletters from Artyarns which Els recommended. They teach me how to make short rows. After I have finished the afghan I started on, I have to sit down and go though these, and practise!

Good luck with the shawl, Noreen! AUD ;-))

Oh, that looks like the stripy round afghan that was in the link to the Iwannaknit camp, in the discussion of the origami pullover.

Aud, I was pretty vague in my question, so don't you worry about

*that*, grin! WHAT newsletters, and HOW can I acquire them? Hugs, Noreen

Yes, doesn't it? I've been searching the internet trying to find a pattern for that round afghan. That's where I've come up with the pictures of the gorgeous Charlotte's Web Shawl that I'd love to find the pattern for as well.

Jan, Gem's only been back amongst us a very short time, so she probably didn't see Els's post. I myself somehow missed it, so am glad Aud said something, and am also glad you put up the link for Gem! Hugs, Noreen

Oh, those are pretty! I have a friend who would love one. Do you think they just sell the pattern and not the yarn? I have so much recycled silk, I really can't justify spending $80+ to acquire even MORE of it! LOL

The pattern is available for $3.50 but it looks just like the standard short-row circle pattern that's been around for ages, except for the really nice lace edging.

For the short-rowed circle you just cast on half the width you want (this is the radius, half the diameter) in a multiple of 5 stitches, and knit one long row back from the center to the outside edge. Then knit back but stop 5 stitches short of the center, and knit back to the outside edge, keeping all the loops on the needle. The next time stop 5 stitches short of where you stopped before, and so on until you only knit 5 stitches at the edge. Then you change colors and knit all the stitches back to the center, and out again, and start the short rows again. When you have enough to make the circle, either cast off or knit it together with the cast-on row. Then knit an edging around it.

You could work the edging together with the long triangles, but you might have to fudge a little segment if it didn't work out evenly. It would take some math to figure the number of rows you were going to make in advance and find a lace pattern that fit neatly into that number. It can have up to 10 pie segments depending on how wide it is and how many stitches you use in each short row.

Ah thank you so much! Yes, that does look familiar now that I actually see it in words. I know that I actually have the pattern around somewhere... either that or I'm confusing it with the striped knitted ball that I made quite a few of years ago for Matthew, my cousin's son, and a couple of friends' kids when they were little. No matter, I've forwarded your instructions to myself. Thanks again! :o)
