How to Reverse Shapings?

Mar 21, 2005 4 Replies

Hi All,

I am relatively new to knitting, and after a few scarves and hats I decided to try a baby sweater. Everything was going great until I encountered this instruction: "Work neck shaping to match right front, reversing all shapings." I can't for the life of me figure out what one has to do to reverse shapings. I tried to work each line backwards, but ended up trying to bind off at the end of the row and got stuck.

Can someone please holp me? What's the general rule for reversing shapings?

Here are the instructions for working the right front neck: Row 1: BO 6 sts, k to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1. Row 2: purl Row 3: BO 2 sts, k to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1 Row 4: purl Row 5: BO 1 st, k to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1 Continue purling WS rows, and repeat Row 5 2 times - 4 sts remain Next row: K1, k2tog, k1 Next row: purl Next row: Sl1, k2tog, psso, fasten off.

Thanks! You are lifesavers!! Chris

If you make neckline and armhole shaping for a RIGHT front you have to do the same for the LEFT front. Make the decreases lean the other direction - instead of k2tog use ssk, and vice versa.

I won't knit flat sweaters anymore...

Chris,

I'm no expert, but I think this might be a workable translation to do the left side, assuming that the knit side is the right side of the work. Since you are binding off at the armhole edge, those bind offs would need to be done on the purl side.

Row 1: K1, ssk, knit to end. Row 2: BO 6 sts, purl to end. Row 3: K1, ssk, knit to end. Row 4: BO 2 sts, purl to end. Row 5: K1, ssk, knit to end. Row 6: BO 1 st, purl to end.

I'm sure someone who is much more familiar with this will have a more concise answer, but until then, I hope this will help.
