Vegemite

Gwen, I think that the key is in moderation. If I am mostly careful, then once in a while, I can eat something which is normally forbidden. I like it on white bread with butter - neither of which I eat often any more!

Gwen, Thanks for a very interesting story. The things we learn here! Does the jar give any sodium content?

Yes Katherine and Gwen that is the hick up in Marmite, the salt content. Salted peanuts are so nice as well. Never mind, we have been good for at least one week.....LOL

Today is our local annual neighbourhood watch pick nick, and it is a potluck....Lucky me, now just to show some restraints, maybe do more talking at which I am very good as well....LOL

I was afraid that the sodium count would be very high. Sigh!

Katherine the sodium content is 153 mg. I have always considered the salt content to be "natural" rather than added ( maybe quite wrongly !)

If one cooks fresh vegetables and has a senior moment in the middle of the operation one will find the vegies kind of half burnt and sticking to the pan ( that senior moment did not last long enough for them to be completely burnt !).

Then if you taste this brown "gravy" you will find it very salty - and so this is why I figured that most of the salt content is from the vegetables themselves - I will, of course, gladly stand corrected if this is not so - but there is no way I will stop eating veremite - even though I am a bit old to want " a rose in every cheek" God bless Gwen

Yes, I thought that it was high. I don't use salt in cooking at all, and seldom add it to anything after it is cooked either. Mind you, I will still eat Marmite once in a while. (ANd probably Vegemite, if I can find some in Halifax!)

How to explain it? It is a kind of paste, which can be spread on bread or crackers, or added to soups or stews for added flavour.

Kather> What is Vegemite ????
