We would also stay with Servas hosts -over the 6 years we spent in USA/Canada we stayed with 60 Servas Hosts, so ,since the minimum stay is two days, that accounts for 120 days at least, over the six years. Most times this is a saving but sometimes one does things with the host that one would not bother to do alone - like concerts, etc or maybe taking the host out to dinner or something ( I love concerts but not when on a budget trip). These hosts really made our trip and that is why I have 60 of the best friends in those countries which I could possibly have and we keep in regular contact . Having met them over along period also means we have know some for a long time and have had wedding invites etc etc which we have enjoyed immensely.

In Early November we have one of our hosts, a couple from Seattle ,visiting us for 10 days so we will have lots of fun seeing them again - this length of stay is not usual but we are not "Servas" anymore we are long standing friends by now -they have visited us here before and we have visited them many times. On their last visit we did not have time to show them the district so that is why I begged them to give us more time on this visit( which you will have to do when you visit ) God Bless Gwen

OK, that makes sense, then. I just think about what our two-week vacation costs us, and can't picture where we would get the $$$$ for any more than that!

Katherine if we actually had to "save" money for these trips they would never have happened. We always rented our home for a year ( one reason we went for a whole year as it is easy to rent for such a period) and the rent covered the air fare and all expenses still going on at home - like rates etc, and then gave us extra to use as well. So then we just spent what we would spend at home ie $50 per day $350 per week. We would come home about $1500 better off then if we stayed at home ! If you do not think you spend 350 per week at home try adding it up, electricity, telephone, petrol insurance and registration for the car, food etc etc .

I realise lots of people do not like renting their home and it take a lot of effort to pack everything up -we always left the place totally unfurnished- but since it allowed us to travel so extensively I figured it was worth it. Also the frequent flyer miles earned on these trips helped - of the six round the world flights and one to South America we received one free round the world and the South American one was free too as well as the one to Fiji last year and two to Melbourne.

On one of our round the world tickets we also travelled from New York to Southampton (UK) on the QE11 for six days for just $150 dollars each extra ( cheaper than a motel and Oh! what food )

Happy travelling God Bless Gwen

Gwen, It sounds wonderful. Maybe one of these days, Keith and I will be able to do something like that. Meanwhile, I'll enjoy your stories.
