When in Peru, what yarn to buy?

I have a dear friend who lives in Peru and will be coming back to the States in January. I would love for him to pick me up some local yarns and bring them with him when he comes. Any idea of what kind of yarn I should specify? I would think Alpaca would be the most "local / regional" type of yarn and less $$$ than buying it here.

I would think that Alpaca would be the best. Advise him to check the smell carefully, though. Where in Ireland did you get the wool?

Alpaca. Vicuna if he can get it legally and without having to mortgage his firstborn.

Most people aren't. Vicuna is a camelid, smaller than an alpaca with nicer fuzz. They were on some worldwide endangered species list for a long time, aren't now, but also aren't bred in captivity. I have a .5g sample of unspun fuzz and it is a marvel to behold.

I have held some alpaca that really reeked. It was kind of like wet straw, and I have never been able to get rid of the smell. SO now I am careful to make sure that there is no scent at all. That being said, most alpaca is great!
