My Question: Beading Fears

So, what is the one color or technique you are absolutely terrified to use/try?

I'm afraid to try lampworking cuz I'm afraid I'd *LOVE* it!!! Then I'd have yet another art form that has me hooked. I'm too hooked already! LOL! [I'm into beading, fabric art, and collage.]

The one color I avoid is blue cuz it's just not my favorite color.....

I'm afraid to try anything new b/c I've got so many irons in the fire now I can't keep up! LOL

I'm deathly afraid of purple. Not sure why...pink scares me, too, but not as much.

I know what you mean about purple. It gives me a headache. Never have liked it. If I tried to wear any purple/mauve shade it makes me look really sallow and ill. Could not bear to embroider with it, had to change colour schemes. Guess what the bedding plants that DH put in the wall baskets turned out to be mostly purple surfinias. Not enjoying the wall this summer and I dare not rip them out. Only two more months to suffer before they go over.

I shall make sure I am with him when he gets plants next year. Shirley

I am not terrified of it, but whenever I use the color green, it never looks good. What is that all about? I like the color green! I have these visions of a peaceful design, but it always ends up looking terrible! Maybe I should invest in quality beads or something.

I'm afraid to warp up my bead loom when I move into the studio next month, because I love weaving and have successfully (well, sorta) resisted beadweaving as an addiction but a loom..... I'm doomed!

I'm afraid to try anything new because I know I'll end up a week later with yet another addiction and I use colours I'm comfortable with because of the same!

I'm afraid to try Lampworking because I'm afraid of fire - duh. I'm hesitant (not really afraid) to try brick stitch again because I've failed at it so many times. I did buy a book from the Interweave hurt book sale on Right Angle Weave, so I will try that this summer. I don't like to design with lime green, it's my least favorite color, though I like other shades of green. In reference to the post above about designing with green, I think it's a hard color to design with because it is such a dominant color. If you put it with other colors, the design looks better if you use less green.

I usually use pink or red with green, it seems to calm it down.

I'm a purple-holic though! LOL

The technique I want to learn but am too stoopid to do so is bead crochet. Even took a hands-on lesson from Dawn Dalto. No go. Duh. Beads, crochet hook and thread go flying across the room every time because I get so frustrated.

And Dutch spiral. I can't figure it out no matter what.

There's no color I don't use. Lately I've been using a lot of greens. Maybe it's because everything outside is so brillantly green this time of year, maybe it's because I'm yearning to own my own little patch o'green somewhere (why I have my balcony loaded with plants and flowers).

Good question. I'm afraid of freeform. I can't do it. I like symmetry when I work, but I LOVE the look of freeform.

Freeform peyote. Can't do it; can't let go of symmetry.

Bead crochet, spirals for technique. I avoid bright red, orange and yellow unless they are beat up trade beads. Most straight primary colors I guess I avoid. Muted and pastels I like, love purple, green and all cool colors.

Brick stitch is very easy, please email me if you think there's anything I might explain that could help. It's much easier than peyote or right angle weave. You can't get the tension wrong, once you get the hang of it you'll love it.

I have a hard hard time with applied floral cane, a'la Leah Fairbanks

Not because I'm bad at it, but because I just shy away from it. I've made a couple of floral cane beads that turned out OK, certainly not discouraging for early attempts... but I'm still scared of the stuff. Maybe because Leah is my hero, going back years and years to when I first discovered her amazing goddesses! I don't know. Someday, oh someday maybe I'll tackle that technique. Maybe I should take a class with Leah!

I have to agree with you about purple... it makes me seriously cringe. For some reason it doesn't seem natural to me, even in flowers... but, for that matter, neither does the lighter range of blues.

Good thread Barbara. I'm scared to tackle herringbone. I just don't have faith in myself to do it.

With poor hand and finger dexterity and lack of success with metalsmithing (boo hoo) I'm not going to do any lampworking. People who frequently drop things just ought not hold fire!

And I just don't like orange or brown. Can't help it. Though I love how the bright orange/red Hyacinth Swarovskis livens reds.

And I avoid cold reds (magenta pinks, wine as opposed to rusty maroon, and most purples). Worn close to the face they often pull uncomplimentary into the complexion making me look like I'm having a hot flash, or heat stroke, or am bruised.
