OT: U.S. primaries & interesting times.

Hey Gang, how about some predictions for 2008??

Mr. Bush's trip to mid-east a waste of aircraft fuel, he fails to have any impact on the Israeli/Palestinian real-estate war.

Barack Obama chosen by democratics and wins presidency, John Edwards will be Obama's running mate and become vice-president.

Russia with it's huge oil reserves makes a fortune selling oil to China.

China launches and tests first small space airliner.

Gasoline in U.S. to double by August 2008.

Food stamp use to soar.

I will lose twenty pounds by July 2008.

I don't think we're quite there yet.

With those little hotel beds that look like tanning beds.

Certainly $3.50-$4.00/gallon

No.

Global average temperatures will plummet, and the Northwest Passage will not open up. Jim.

Current price here is one pound eighteen pence per litre. Almost nine US dollars per US gallon Bruce

There is a very interesting article, which I could forward to you, Jim if you like, from the Space and Science Research Center, (SSRC) in Orlando, Florida, forecasting a new "cold" cycle, such as 200 years ago. So much for AlGore, and his "sky is falling" theme!

I agree. Barack is doing well in the northern states that have been fully integrated for generations, but I doubt many in the Bubba Belt are progressive enough to vote for an Uppity N*****. I'm not sure they are even ready for a woman. When the primaries move south will be the real test for both Barack and Hillary.

Where I grew up in the northeast, no one was in the least fazed that my best friend was black. When we left the area, it was clear that some people thought there was something very wrong with it.

When asked the other day, that was my line that the USA is neither ready for a woman nor a black yet. So I believe it will be a rank outsider.

It's a sign of just how backwards we are that Obama is considered black in the first place. His mother is white and he was raised by his white grand parents. In many, many cultures, that would make him white.

Meant to say, also, that we could be ready for a woman without Hillary having to be that woman. But when she looses, she'll blame it on being female instead of on her own poor politics.

My question is: if Hillary loses, will she take the blame in any way? Or will she claim it was a backlash against Bill?

After all when Clinton was president, wasn't his run nicknamed "Billary"? Just asking

(I pasted your reply to Dr. Brat above this; you'd posted below her sig delimiter which means in a reply, your comments don't show up at all)

I'd hope she'd take the high road and not try to blame her loss on her husband, instead recognizing the fact that her policy positions may not have been palatable to enough people to garner her a win.

Have you read Gloria Steinem's article in this morning's NYT?

I was asking around the other day exactly what he was composed of as I did not think he was black/black (for want of a nicer way to put it) I thought perhaps he was Indo/black.

You are right though, he is perceived as black and I believe that is why he won't make it.

It's a pity, I think the top two candidates are eliminated and not for reasons that matter. They are breaking ground and maybe next time round it will be possible. It has to come eventually.

I am not heavy into television and listen to radio and am hot on podcasting these days and listening via mp3. One has a different take on news that way, radio is a great leveller, you cannot see colour nor can you see whether the person interviewed is attractive or otherwise. I am frequently surprised when I do see someone I have listened to on television and discover they are not at all what I thought. It's humbling.

That is not the reason why I am not in favor of him; it is that he has little experience on the global front.

A Presidential candidate can *say* what he/she will do as President, and words are cheap. Now what someone can accomplish, with a divided congress, and in an international environment where he isn't known as a leader yet, is too soon to tell.

You know my leanings, Elizabeth, but it is certainly a scary election, anyway you look at it.

WOW, did I really say this to a Professor??

It ends with this sentiment: "We have to be able to say: 'I?m supporting her because she?ll be a great president and because she?s a woman.'?

I can't agree with the first part and I refuse to vote based only on the second. And I don't think I'm alone in that. Gloria Steinem is allowed to have her opinion, but I don't have to agree with it or take it as gospel. I'd gladly vote for a woman, but I won't vote for Hillary Clinton.

Yep, and I agree. I don't like Clinton's politics. I like Obama, but I'd like to see him get more experience. I don't agree with all of Richardson's positions, but I think he's the best person for the job, precisely because he *has* experience. The Republicans pretty much all scare me, except Guiliani and McCain, and they scare me sometimes.

BTW, I found this quiz enlightening:
