Enamels on stoneware

Hi all smee posting again,

I have considered about personalising dog/cat bowls; and rather make clients wait for me to make a bowl from scratch - I thought of glazing a blank and using enamels to personalise it.

So, I bought some powder on-glaze enamels for refire to 750C and, using the medium that my supplier advised to use (which incidentally is gloopy and smells of garlic), have painted test patches on a white gloss glazed egg cup. I haven't fired it yet, but the enamels don't seem to be drying and have remained wet. Is this normal? Or should they dry enough to not smudge when picked up?

My supplier is Potclays in Stoke on Trent, England.

Thanks JM

I used to do a lot of named mugs, so I would make a load of *Blanks*, and then add the names using Potterycrafts water-based on-glazes, these are sold in small pots and work very well, just add a bit of water, like using poster colours. Since my earlier writing was done with iron oxide on bisc. prior to glaze firing, I use their Warm Brown, which looks just the same :-)

No, they dry fairly quickly. Obviously what you have got is an oil based medium. I've never liked them personally, though they do allow some techniques that you can't do easily with water based media, such as fading etc.

It is actually sold as a water based medium - do u think they may have mis-sold me the wrong thing? I'll have to check on the part number. JM
