Re: Clockwise or anti-clockwise?

i heard similar - the eastern style shapes from the inside, western from the outside.

what i find fun & interesting is i throw (shape) from the inside, and my new friends in this claremont town throw (shape) from the outside but are converting quickly to the shaping from the inside style. meanwhile i have no drive to bother shaping from the outside...

maybe the eastern style is more fun?

Deb: I need to know the make and model number of the wheel, so I can look up the proper schematic. With an AC motor, it may be possible to reverse the direction but I'll have to do the research based on your information. Sometimes it's just easier to move the motor in closer, and make a figure 8 from the drive belt :>)

Thanks for that! Boyfriend understands your figure of eight idea and thinks thats a great way to solve the problem!!

Yes, it works quite well, except:

You won't be able to easily reverse the direction again, except by "undoing" what you've done (if no one else ever uses the wheel, that's not a problem.)

Mind that the belt does not rub against itself as it passes by in the center of the "8". If it does, you are going to chew through quite a few belts.

Good luck! Wayne Seidl

My first ceramics course was in Japan when I was in college so I learned to throw clockwise (I'm right handed by the way). I've had instructors since then who have found it difficult to teach throwing techniques to me because they get turned around when the wheel is going the opposite direction than they're used to. Anyway, I've decided that it's a nice skill to know how to throw and trim in both directions. I'm much fonder of clockwise though; I feel like I have more control that way. But every once in a while I'll flip the switch on my wheel and go counter clockwise for a bit :-)

Perhaps I should consider leaving my wheel clockwise. I have felt comfortable with it that way so far. I am right-handed but am told that I do a lot of things left-handed ie using cutlery etc. Maybe it's not important to have the wheel turning in the 'right' direction but that it feels right to me!
