Missing you and quilting, long

There's an awful racket going on in my stash, haven't touched it in weeks. After getting some quilts off to the Japan survivors, NIN sent out a desperate plea for receiving blankets. We shipped out a nice stack of them - you should just See our postmistress stuff one of those 'if it fits' boxes. She takes my needy babies passion to heart. Then, NIN asked for washable diapers; the economy makes disposable diapers out-of-reach for babies who can afford nothing. No problem, I thought. Our Judie in New York sent me a pattern and a sample even. I had soft plush fold over elastic, PUL, some snaps and fabric and was off and running. It surprised me at the time needed to make just one diaper. Wondered what the price was if 'store bought'. You can see something like what I'm stitching at

$5 to $10 for just one? and it's been a while but I seem to remember that a baby needs at least a dozen or two; more if it's raining. My new skill? Our John in Ohio would be so proud. I used up all the snap tape here and all the soft velcro. Next? the snap tool that requires a hammer. Found Mr. Esther and asked him for a real hammer. ( No more of that sissy 'girl' hammer toy for me.) Haven't bashed my fingers, not even once. If you ever need snaps applied to anything, I'm your man. I'll be back - but for now I'm diapering. At my age? Who'd a thought? Polly

You seem to be doing sterling work there, Polly. I am sure those babies will just love your efforts.

Is it me? I looked at the website and just boggled. I know I like gadgets (well, duh!) but really!

The mother's clothing and squeezing and plumping stuff is just plain scary! I mean what, exactly, IS a muffin top, and does it contain blueberries?

This band wagon is more of a juggernaut. Is this fueled by watching too many celebrities re-gaining their figures three days postpartum and being back on set a week later, I wonder? Geez!

I'm getting old.

You do such fabulous work, Polly. Be careful of those fingers.

Something you might like to look into, especially if there are a couple or three of you doing this in the area, is a bench mounted press for studs, snaps and eyelets. The dies are expensive, but if you only bought the one you needed and could share the load...

Hey Polly

I'm going to show my ignorance here. I'll admit I haven't even thought of a diaper in 40 some years. Are your creations diapers or are they what plastic pants used to be. Do you put diaposible diapers in these diaper covers. Explain please.

I went to Home Depot a couple years ago and found some "cleaning rags" and thought I get a bundle. When I got them home, I discovered they were what I remembered as washable diapers I used those many years ago. Snow white and so soft and big enough to make an old fashioned diaper. Instead of using them for cleaning, I use them for another old fashioned chore. Drying dishes.

Am I telling my age or what????

Answering in reverse, Kate - you'd mentioned the diapers/shop cloths at Home Depot. I try to get the guys in the family gifts that are useful and always head there to get them stacks of the cleaning rags. They are so pleased to have them instead of aftershave that offends their noses. The diapers I'm making have 3 layers - a soft inside, a liner of the neatest waterproof poly you just ever touched called PUL and an outside cover that is soft and will absorb leaks. The diaper has a pocket down the center where a soaker can be inserted - simply a pad of flannel or fleece. I'm guessing that's so they can be removed to wash/dry faster. No need for diaper pins or plastic pants. It's a pretty neat setup and the diapers may be well made enough to pass on to the next tiny baby. Did I 'splain okay? Polly

I really haven't wandered around that website, Nel. Just pasted the first one I saw that showed the diaper/pocket/cover design. I guess about all I noticed there was the prices. gulp. Actually, I don't know anything about the prices of disposable diapers except I'm told they've become mighty steep. Polly

I'm aware of the bench mounted stuff, Kate but keep in mind that I'm about as challenged with that sort of mechanics as they come. I need help with the coffee pot and toaster; would probably never conquer a press. Polly

Polly, you have the best heart and it's more than good of you to share so much of it with your babies.
