My Mystery SM solved

Well...with the help of all of you here, and some other internet friends, my machine is now identified and dated. It is a Montgomery Ward Model E made by Brunswick. It is a vibrating shuttle machine. It was made during WWI, so some time in the early

40's. The colour of the head and the lack of decoration was what led me to think that it was made during the war, because everything metal at that time was made in colours such as this, and were also made more simply, because of the conservation of metal and time in production. The dating was confirmed by a friend of mine locally. The next step is to take it to a reputable sewing machine repair shop that specializes, or at least has extensive knowledge in the area of vintage and antique machines. This way I can get a shuttle and a bobbin, and they can teach me how to thread and wind, etc. There's a store near where my folks live in Oregon, and they have decent prices. I'll have to spend more on getting parts for it than i spent for the machine, but it's so worth it!

Thank you all so much for helping me figure out this mystery for me.

georg, any luck on the manual yet?

Mum is having a minor crisis at the moment- she'll get over to gram's soon, and then we have to wait for Da to have the time to scan it in or pop it in the mail. He's retired, but works more now than he ever did. You can guess how it is. We'll see it soon though, I hope.

Congrats on getting that far with identifying it!

You can't pull a fast one like that on this group! Either you forgot an "I", or we need to send you back to those history books! ROFLOL

oops, i did, i forgot a I...sorry about that. Stupid pain meds make my hands not work so well. It is indeed WWII. DOH...LOL

Hmm... I wonder if they have "smart" pain meds. That's certainly what I need some days. In fact, I'll just take a plain smart pill some days. Doesn't even have to have a pain med attached! *grin*

well...I've been drinking this new product called "Vitamin Water". I drink the strawberry kiwi flavoured one, and it has ginko in it...i've seen some improvement, actually...and it does help on days i'm on the meds. Hopefully not much longer on them this month. SIGH. Hey, but at least I'm getting some progress made on my completely hand pieced double nine patch queen size top. THe quilt's gonna be completely hand done...even attaching the binding...no machine work at all. It's a nice thing to do while i'm not feeling so well and stuck in bed. Wireless networking and laptops are a great thing, too!

Kathy, it's really worth it! If we didn't have it, i'd be banished to the basement. or stuck in one room all the time. This way, i can have the puter in any room DD is in, and i can even go outside and sit when i'm not feeling well....it's a very good thing.

Kathy, not all of us were around for the first one.

Yep, someone else pointed out my error...now i feel pretty stupid...but you know..i had a good excuse at the time.

I could order parts online, but then i'd have to wait...LOL. I"m going to the folks' next weekend, and i'm sure they can get the parts for me easily

Some of mine have been classics! And the peculiar things the spelling checker throws up don't help!

Making typos is no big thing. It's being caught on them and caught on them and caught on the same darn one AGAIN that is the pits. Just for the record, I noticed it, but my Mama taught me that it is not polite to correct someone else unless you are their mama or teacher.

My DH was writing a restaurant review last week, which he gave to me to proof. He had high priase for the sauce made with ancho peppers. Then two paragraphs later he referred to that "anchor" pepper sauce. He did not like my comment about how heavy it must have made the sauce. Spell Check didn't catch it, since anchor is a word.

Thanks...LOL. I just called the shop, they'll be willing to work on it for me. In fact, when i told them what it was, they were excited, as they hadn't seen one in several years. I'm thinking I might have something really special here. But it's not for sale...LOL.

No rush, georg...the machine will be in the shop for a couple of weeks getting a tune up and parts. Thanks again. I'd like to pay for postage if you mail it, or reciprocate with FQ's. Can you send me your snail mail, please? craftigirl at earthlink dot net
