Well...with the help of all of you here, and some other internet friends, my machine is now identified and dated. It is a Montgomery Ward Model E made by Brunswick. It is a vibrating shuttle machine. It was made during WWI, so some time in the early
40's. The colour of the head and the lack of decoration was what led me to think that it was made during the war, because everything metal at that time was made in colours such as this, and were also made more simply, because of the conservation of metal and time in production. The dating was confirmed by a friend of mine locally. The next step is to take it to a reputable sewing machine repair shop that specializes, or at least has extensive knowledge in the area of vintage and antique machines. This way I can get a shuttle and a bobbin, and they can teach me how to thread and wind, etc. There's a store near where my folks live in Oregon, and they have decent prices. I'll have to spend more on getting parts for it than i spent for the machine, but it's so worth it!Thank you all so much for helping me figure out this mystery for me.
georg, any luck on the manual yet?
