OT I want to get back to quilting and sewing!

But stuff keeps happening!

My dad is talking about driving to NY. He does have some short term memory loss, and recent events have aggravated the problem, whether permanently or temporarily we will not know for a while. The thought of him driving 1500 miles alone right now scares the bejeezus out of me. I totally get that right now he wants to visit his family here though.

He enjoyed rail travel when he was young and in the army, so I have emailed Amtrak and asked them to mail him information on senior discounts and the USA Rail Pass. He is a bit tight when it comes to money, and the funeral expenses on top of the medical expenses hurt a bit. I _think_ that combining the rail pass with the senior discount he might be able to travel by train more cheaply than flying, and perhaps comparably to driving. There would be a two hour drive to get to the departure station, and an hour or two at the end depending on which station he could arrange. I would bloody well get kiri to drive me to fetch him from the station at this end, and drive him to a car rental if it would keep him from the long drive.

Has anyone had any experience with the Amtrak USA Rail Pass? My one worry is that using it properly seems a little complicated.

I am now going to prep the fabric for Ash's quilt. Short of a bomb falling on the house nothing is stopping me! I have already done the math and ought to check it again, but I need textiles and dyes and thread and accidentally pinning bits to myself and all right now. I shall be generous in my measures, and add a half yard to all totals. I have decided to do this in aquatic colors, and on the largish side because he is growing like a weed. Boys do that, one minute they are as big as a loaf of bread, and the next they are 12 years old and sprouting up like a beanstalk.

We have dear friends who are 88 years old and wanted to travel from Florida to Baltimore where they used to live and where their DS lives. We drove them to the Amtrak railroad station to check on tickets and they decided to get a small bedroom compartment because it has a small restroom and he has problems. He did not think the cost was very much more after considering he would not have to wait if he "had to go" and they could lay down to sleep for the overnight trip. They thought about the trip a few months, and made arrangements to be picked up at the destination. He paid for the tickets online ahead of time. He has said they would do it again some other time. I'm glad Barbara knew about Amtrak - especially the being able to have his own restroom. The first thing our high school Spanish teacher taught us was how to say "Where is the bathroom?" It's important to old folks taking diuretics, and our bp meds seriously attack our short term memory. Hugs and sincere sympathy to you NM. It is so very tough to lose your mother even if she did have serious directions left with her pastor. Tough anyway; nobody loves you like your mother. That said, truly sincerely - do share with us how you went about flying with your photo id being delayed. What guidance can you give us if we get in that sort of trauma? What proof of id did they accept in such an emergency? Polly

When I found out I was going to have to fly, I immediately went through and found out what ID I would need, and discovered that my DMV non-driver ID had expired and nobody, including me, had noticed. The DMV is supposed to send you notice and forms when it is due to expire, but they hadn't. So I scooted on down to the local office and immediately renewed the thing. If my schedule had not changed the new card would have gotten here in time. They did give me a paper temporary card, and that is what worked when I had to go earlier than expected. I gave the proper people my temporary card paired with the expired photo card, and they were all perfectly happy with it.

I was more worried about metal detectors, but I didn't have to go through one. They just X-rayed all my carry on stuff and my shoes, and took "naughty antler pictures" of me. In other words I got to stand in the thing and make antlers on my head with my hands, and they took one of "those" pictures that some people made such a fuss about a little bit ago. Oh, and they had to search my hair. Made me glad I had not put it up the first time, and being forewarned I left it down the second. I suppose they were looking for a cleverly concealed garrote or something.
