OT Ping Kate G. re Ryan

Okay, Kate, we are all dying to know how Ryan did living on his own. Please let us know when you get a chance... I'm sure this evening will be filled with all kinds of chattering about how it went and with Ryan settling back into the homelife routine again!

He did GREAT!!!! Yes -- back home tonight (after working 9:00 - 5:15 today at Krogers - grocery). Tired.... but really proud of himself (well deserved).

He has lots of stories. He has a new appreciation for "taking care of stuff" as a couple of the kitchen cabinet doors... when you open them have loose or no hinges. Also one side of the kitchen sink was plugged... and the sprayer didn't work. He has enough autism stuff going on that these kinds of things really bother him.... but he handled them well. They did open the conversation about that is why Mom and Dad are so "fussy" about taking care of stuff. "Broken stuff is no fun!" His response... "I get it now!"

One night he fixed (from start to finish... from scratch) Tuna & Noodle Casserole. His pasta boiled over (who hasn't had that happen!) but other than that... he did a great job. He told me "it tasted as good as yours, Mom" -- so I guess I've another cook in the house.

He left the apartment at least once each day (to go for a walk or up to the Dairy Queen...) and was able to lock upon leaving... and unlock upon returning (and not losing the key!) I stopped by one day -- and noticed his bed wasn't made. I said something like... I guess in YOUR HOUSE -- you don't need to make your bed. He looked up at me... a little guiltily. I reminded him... HIS HOUSE -- HIS RULES. It's however you want to do it. He told me that he decided later in the day he should make it in case he gets company.

He is quite proud of himself... and is eager to try it again! So from my perspective.... SUCCESS on all counts!!!

We'll have him try it again later this fall... for like 7-10 days. (and a couple of more times after the first of the year -- he can stay up to 2 weeks at a time.) That will give him a little more cooking, a little more cleaning and even at least 1 or 2 loads of laundry. Without televison (no cable) -- he also has to entertain himself, too. He's capable of all of that -- but as we all know -- when nobody is reminding us what to do... or when to do it... it takes on a whole new look!

Thanks to everyone for your kind thoughts and prayers.

Oh Kate, I'm so thrilled for you. This is marvellous news. If he ever stops to think quietly! I hope he realises just how amazing he is becoming. You must be so proud. I congratulate you for 'allowing' him to take this giant step and for nurturing him into the young man you can be so proud of. The fact that he could say that his meal tasted as good as yours, is, I think, even more of an achievement than the actual cooking of it.

You know, my strongest feeling after this big adventure, is that I wish I could meet him. Please tell him that someone all the way over in England is cheering his accomplishment and eagerly awaiting the tales from his next adventure.

Ryan, you're a star! (so are you Kate) . In message , Kate G. writes

Woot! Great job, all of you! Kate, you've done an incredible job preparing your son for independence. It's a job all of us parents hope to accomplish. You have proof positive that you and Ryan are just about ready for the "big step". Congratulations. Take some time to revel in it all (maybe let Ryan make dinner).

love, Sunny
