Question about Summer Quilt Camp in Flagstaff

I am considering taking quilt classes next summer in Flagstaff. It would let DH spend time with his family down in Phoenix while I'm getting some prime quilt time up in the (relative) cool of Flagstaff. I know some of you have been. Can anybody fill me in?

Thanks, Sunny

I have wanted to take some of the classes there for a long time. Maybe I can plan and save and do it this year. I know that Sandy, in Henderson, has gone frequently. And it is much cooler in Flag than here in Phoenix.

I might be interested, too. I would like to know if Sandy would mind sharing an approximate cost of whatever besides the travel costs- classes, meals, lodging, etc.? That would give us an idea how much we'd need to save...

You can also go to the website and get the information. There is a housing option available, staying in a dorm and getting a meal ticket for the student cafeteria. In my experience the Universities have pretty good food, at reasonable prices. I think that the year I was trying to go I figured a bit over $1000 for room/board/and classes (staying the full week but taking a day off of classes in the middle. And attending the "special" evening events. )

You could email them for more info. The dates for the next camps are on the website. I knew Audrey from what seems like 100 years ago. She used to work at The Quilted Apple in Phoenix.

Woohoo, Sunny! You'd love it! I go every year -- I've been going since

1998, so that should give you some idea. ;) The web site is , and the schedule will probably be posted sometime in the spring -- along about April?

And also much cooler than here in the Las Vegas area. Of course, there's also limited AC, so if you're in a classroom with no AC and there's a heat snap, you'll learn to love oscillating fans. LOL!

Leslie, I can't believe how wonderful it would be to see all of the people who are interested right now! Okay, classes average about $75-$80 per day; you can take as many or as few as you like during the week. I usually take no more than four; I get overloaded after that. As for room and board, you have the option of staying in the dorm (on the NAU campus), which includes a meal ticket (I don't know what that costs, since I don't do that), or you could stay in a hotel and buy your meals. That's what I do, and it varies, of course, according to what hotel you choose and how much you eat. LOL!

Oh, just reading about this makes retirement sound so exciting. My husband loves the Flagstaff area and would find lots of things to do while I quilt. I hate the thought of leaving my good friends in the Chicago area but moving to an area with lower living expenses would allow us to enjoy travel like this. If he knew where he wanted to live we could go now. He is 65 this fall. He will work at least one more year but I see he is beginning to think about a more relaxed life than the daily grind. He will have a consulting contract for a few years after retirement which will be nice additional income. I have emotionally cut my ties with this house and all our "stuff" so am ready to go. Now if he could just decide where! Yes, I am letting him decide with three rules: 1. a good quilt shop within a one hour drive.

  1. a good air port with>I am considering taking quilt classes next summer in Flagstaff. It

ooooh! I think we should have an RCTQ gathering at QuiltCamp!

Dang, Sandy, the schedule won't be up until April?? We are getting out vacation time off slips in for 1/2/09 to Memorial Day 2009, and in October we draw for day after Memorial Day to Labor Day 2009. We are limited on how many can be off at any one time.

Ginger, the schedule won't be up, but camp dates are already set. The next QCitP will be July 12-19, 2009. Does that help at all? I know you won't know what classes will be offered, but that does give you a general idea of *when*. :S

Have you considered the Tidewater area of Virginia? We have all you listed, plus a big show every February, plus medium to mild winters, plus History and so on, plus Moi! Grins, PAT in VA/USA

So, it is right after the Sisters Quilt Show, it looks like.

Think I'd better start saving now.....
