Back from camp :)

I'm back! I spent a lovely week in Flagstaff, where the temperature didn't go over about 89° and where it actually cooled down in the evenings! Wow! ;)

I took three classes from Sharon Schamber (piec-liqué, paper-less paper piecing, machine appliqué), and I thoroughly enjoyed them all. My fourth class was an applibond class from Joan Shay, who is terribly sweet -- but I don't think applibond is going to be something I use frequently. So now I have four new projects to finish up and a pile of "stuff" still to organize from yesterday's trip home. Oh, and a house to clean, since DH and Dexter were here to create havoc while I was away. ;)

I went to camp with a friend (some of you met her in Houston last year

-- her name is Judy, if you recall), and she took two more classes than I did -- several from Elly Sienkiewicz. Elly was also the featured speaker at the farewell banquet Saturday evening; she was really interesting! I just wish I liked to do hand appliqué and that sort of thing, because I really admire those Baltimore album quilts.

Oh, and I won a door prize the very last evening! It was 20 FQs of hand-dyed fabrics! Yippee! I'll have to think about how I want to use them. :)

It's so good to be back! I missed you all, since I simply didn't have time to check the group while I was away. Since there was a rather large number of posts, I've had to mark everything as read, so I'll have to happy dance, hug, commiserate and jump for joy in a sort of "generic" way. ;)

It's good to hear of your safe return, Sandy. Hope the chores don't take you too long, and you can get around to playing with the 'started at camp' things without too much delay!. I do have to ask, though, what is 'paper-less paper piecing'? . In message , Sandy Foster writes

Sounds like you had a wonderful time! If you don't know what to do with your prize, I'll take it off your hands :-)

Sounds like heaven!

I love her quilts! I'll be you had fun. I'm looking forward to seeing your works in progress.

Ug on the housecleaning. My girlfriend was telling me about her wonderful housecleaner and I admit to some envy ;-)

Wow! Sounds like the makings of more than one project. I hear hand dyes are wonderful in applique ;-)

We are rather talkative. See you in Houston?

LOL! I do admire your generosity, Susan. ;) I have to admit that I don't know *yet* what I'm going to do with it, but I'll figure something out.

It was. :) Remember the musical Camelot? Remember how it only rained after sundown? That's what we had in Flagstaff last week.

I love her quilts, too -- and seeing them in person was amazing. I'd seen Scarlet Serenade in Houston last year, but she brought several others, too. Wow.

I used to have a cleaning lady when I lived close to the Mexican border (they were cheap, since they had to compete with the illegal ones), and it was wonderful. I really miss having one these days.

LOL! I hope they're as good in machine appliqué, since I'm not much on hand appliqué. ;)

Absolutely! Just 100 days now until I get there! Be sure to join the Houston list so we all know where everyone is staying and can get in touch. :)

Is Sharon Schamber the one whose quilt was awarded best of show at Paducah this year? I'd love to take a class from her! I got to see the quilt "up close and personal" a few weeks ago, and it's breathtaking.

Glad to hear you had a great camp and some relief from the heat. Oh, to be in the mountains at this time of year. Sigh.

Hi Sandy- I am from the U.K. A few years ago we came over on holiday to America and stayed overnight in Flagstaff at a lovely Hotel there. We visited Yosemite National Park eventually making our way down to Las Vegas. Thoroughly enjoyed that part of the world. I presume I missed out on a few quilters shops. around there - The weather was particularly cold at that time of year - November. Irene V.

Gosh! I wish I'd known you were here -- assuming that I'd moved here when you came through. Yes, there are some nice LQSs here. :) And Flagstaff in November can be pretty chilly. ;)

Yes, she's the one! And she also took Best of Show in Houston last fall. I didn't get to see Sedona Rose (the Paducah quilt), since it was a purchase prize, but she brought Scarlet Serenade (Houston's Best of Show), so I had a second, closer look. She also brought several other quilts, and I'm amazed that any one person can have so much talent. She paints some details on her quilts, she machine quilts beautifully, and she has come up with some wonderful construction techniques.

It was really nice to have that relief from the heat! I'm back to triple digits again, and I really feel the difference. Of course, in the winter we get our payoff. :)

Thanks, Pat! :)

That's an interesting name, isn't it? Sharon Schamber uses a lot of glue in her construction, and that's the key. In that particular technique, she uses freezer paper templates, but she removes them after pressing the seam allowances (with starch!) over the paper. Then she glues everything in place and finally stitches. It's very precise.
