Back from Houston

I'm home! Unfortunately, there were so many messages waiting for me that I've marked all but one as "read" and will continue from there. So, happy dances and hugs to all who need them -- I hope you understand. :)

I had a wonderful time -- as always. I had two very good classes and a really nice roommate (I'm lucky that way ). I did my part to support the Houston economy, too. ;)

Coming home wasn't so great, though. DH had to leave suddenly while I was away, as his aunt passed away rather earlier than expected; it's a blessing, really, since she was in a great deal of pain, though of course the family is dealing with the loss. However, while the house was empty (does it ever happen any other way?), our ice maker gave up the ghost and decided to flood the kitchen with water much faster than it would be possible for any superhero-icemaker to be able to freeze it into ice cubes. The floor was drenched. In addition,t he flow of water caused all of the food in the freezer to defrost, so that's now sitting in a garbage can, waiting for tomorrow's pickup. Ugh. Still, DSonIL came over and turned off the water to the icemaker, so things could be worse. Murphy has been busy .... ;S

Oh man! That's terrible! I can imagine there was a ton of water for you to deal with. Hope there wasn't damage to your home? I'm so sorry for your loss.... and your refrigerator. But I'm glad Houston was a wonderful experience for you. I *am* going one of these years.

Sorry to hear of your family loss, and also to the very damp reception you got on returning home. Water is just so pervasive. I do hope nothing has been permanently damaged. Deep breath ... and re-stock. . In message , Sandy writes

disaster like that. I hear those kind of stories from people in Ohio who go to Florida for a portion of the winter, and come back to a basement of 8 feet of water. It gives me the willies to think about it. Welcome back, now start moping up.

Yay!! Welcome back, Sandy!!!

I'm so sorry about your loss ... and your fridge (not to mention the mess!!)!! But look at it this way ... now's the perfect time to clean the fridge!! Now, you'll be able to clean the fridge and then be done with it for a while - and you can get to usin' all those ideas you've got swirlin' 'round your head from the Show!!

And we still want details on all that you saw, heard, and ... what the heck, smelled! in Houston!! :)

Hugs!! Connie :) (Who HATES to clean the fridge - and why wouldn't I? All the men folk in the family don't understand the "put-the-cap-back-on-the-jar" principle - which leads to a DISGUSTIN' mess!! YUCK!!!)

I think I'm somewhat restored after a good night's sleep, so I'll try to describe my Houston trip a bit.

Karen (a local friend who does gorgeous crazy quilts and embellishments) and I left here *early* Wednesday morning, flew to Houston, checked into our rooms at the Holiday Inn Select/Greenway Plaza, and took the shuttle to the convention center. There, we picked up our registration materials and poked around for a little while; this is where I learned that DH's aunt had passed away. She'd been quite ill and in terrible pain, but the doctors had thought she'd be around for about six more months. Given her pain, though, I'm fairly sure she was relieved to be finished with it.

Once the preview opened, Karen and I took off for the vendors, splitting up to look at what we each wanted to see. Karen didn't have a cell phone, so we just routinely set up meeting places and times so we'd find each other again. I'd decided that I really didn't need fabric this trip, so I only bought fabric twice. ;) Once was while I was giving in to the temptation to buy a wonderful kaleidoscope (I've always loved them); while paying for that, I saw some Paula Nadelstern fabric that I just couldn't let go, so it came home with me. Then I saw a gorgeous oriental panel and some companion yardage, so those also went into my bag. But I didn't buy anymore fabric this trip!

I did get a few books, though; I'm a bookaholic, I think. I bought the EQ6 Pieced Drawing book, as well as one called Hand Appliqué by Machine (Beth Ferrier); that one was because of the demo Beth F. was giving. Somewhere along the line during our stay, I also picked up Alex Anderson's newest book, since I just love those colors and hope to make a quilt in taupes and neutrals one day; I also bought Karen MccTavish's latest book. Oh, and I subscribed to QuiltMania, which I'd been tempted to do last year.

I spent a *long* time looking at the wonderful quilts -- all of them, IMNSHO, are winners, since they have to be juried into the show. Gorgeous, just gorgeous -- even the ones that aren't to my personal taste. I think I took about 300-400 photos, but I won't be able to post them, since the rules say you have to credit the makers. I just can't possibly remember who made what! :S

Classes. I took a three-hour class from Susan Cleveland on piping curves. It was very good, but the supply list was far longer than needed; taking the 6" x 24" ruler required was a pain that shouldn't have been necessary, since a shorter one would have worked. We had fabric for an entire quilt, but we only had time to make 1/4 block. Still, Susan C. was very good, so it wasn't a bad class to take. :)

I did have a full-day class from Philippa Naylor, and that one was everything I'd hoped and more. She's probably the most positive, encouraging teacher I've ever had. She refuses to "decree" what anyone should do. Instead, she says what she does and then says that we should do what works for us. A real pleasure. I learned a *lot* about drafting and machine quilting feathers.

Yesterday morning started rather earlier than it should have, when the wake-up call for the neighboring room came to us instead, followed by amazing noise from that room as they prepared to check out. At one point one of them was having a loud cell phone conversation right outside our door! Sheesh. But the flight home, while quite full, was uneventful, and I've now managed to clean up most of the mess from the failed icemaker. Today is garbage pick-up day, so the ruined stuff will be gone very soon, too. :) With any luck, DSIL will be able to find a replacement icemaker and install it for us, so perhaps DH will return later today to find everything as it should be.

Now to start mucking out the mess created by a DH who doesn't understand the concept of cleaning up a kitchen when I'm away. ;)

Sandy, I'm so sorry to hear about your DH's aunt. My prayers are with all your/his family. Please give him my condolences. I'm glad to hear that you had a great time in Houston though. I'm sure hoping to make it one of these years. I can relate to the ice maker thing too. Mine went out almost 10 years ago and we just never replaced it. Oh how I missed it too. Luckily I was home when it decided to poop out so we didn't have too bad of a flood. Hope you get it fixed soon.

Hugs, Mika

I am also home from Houston. Got in yesterday (Tues.) late afternoon after leaving Tina's fairly early Mon. morning. Don't think I will be able to make the drive alone again. sigh.

Still trying to recover. and to find the stuff that DH "put away". sigh.

Sandy, it was good to see both you and Wendy at the show. And to see Nancie R. on Tues. and see a bit of Tina and her family.

hope the clean up goes quicker than mine will....

I was thrilled to see the few RCTQers that I did see! I completely forgot to mention that part of the show. Of course I saw you a couple of times, and there was Wendy waiting for us on Sunday afternoon

-- I'd have been so upset if we'd missed seeing her! I also saw Nancie R., but on Wednesday quite by chance, and Barbara from Houston (and on the Carole Doak list) briefly on Thursday. I wasn't able to make the Doak-group meet-up on Saturday, since I was in class, but I did see Carol on my own between classes.

Now -- what clean-up are you talking about at your house????

While I was in Houston, DH Rick decided to "organize" stuff. I now have a couple dozen small and a dozen and a half (or more) large clear plastic tote-bins with things in them. With no regard to what was with what prior. sigh. So, while I did know generally where what was before I left, now it is in a tote, in one of the stacks of totes, and may or may not be in close proximity to what it was with before. sigh

I do love the man, and he doesn't object to the fabric and all, but communication is lacking at times. For a writer he is very resistant to hearing what is actually being said at times. Or understanding that all organization may not be the same as what he considers organized.
