OT: Quaker lace cloth-use as curtains?

I'm thinking this would be okay as curtains -- at another house I had lace curtains and (store bought) and liked the light and open feel of the room.

Was wondering if anyone here had made their own... and if so, what worked best? More importantly, what went wrong?

Thanks for any advice you'd care to share. I'm thinking to make a pocket (like to hang a quilt) then stitching it along the top/back of the tablecloth... will use plain bars (versus opening/closing gizmos)

I decorate with a cross between English Country and Victorian and always use lace panels on my windows. I have found that the price of buying lace by the yard and making my own is more expensive than I can buy the panels for- and no labor with store bought!

Try Target, WalMart, etc. and also

an search some other websites- I think you can save yourself some work. And sometimes the feeddogs get snarled up in the open spaces in the lace, so it can be a challenge to sew.

Just found this- can't beat the price!!!

Thanks for the hint re the "feed dogs snagging" on the open work. It's basically that I have no money to put into making this place better/ nicer, but do have some supplies on hand. If I can use the tablecloth to offer us privacy and make it a bit prettier, that would be great. Will have to think on the process a little more.

And yes, those curtains are a great price/beautiful too. Just out of my budget at present... (shrugs)

A few weeks ago I hung some pictures (okay, not much energy at this point) and then rearranged things a little too. It's my daughter's home and I'm trying to make it pretty for her. The living room has lots of windows, but except for the two behind me that need to keep out prying eyes, the rest could be lacy and still offer us privacy yet let in light. I'm happiest with the open look.

I'll bet the Furbabies like your design choices. Any kitties too?? Do they bother your pretties?

You can put tissue paper strips under the fabric so the feed dogs do not catch it. Then tear it away when you have done the sewing. I have used that method for lace. Shirley

If you don't have that....I've used the paper roll from the calculator (it was a small one and the paper was about 1 inch wide. worked quite well. IF you use heavier paper shorten your stitch length. that'll help with removing it faster.

You could tape an index card over the LOWERED feed dogs if all else fails HTH Butterfly (I've even sewn lace to sheets to use as curtains...we knew we would only be there 4 or 5 months. )

Thank you!!!

Excellent ideas -- and ones I can duplicate. Also found an antique sari and the width (3') will work for four of the windows. It has a cream background and I'm fairly certain I can cut around the stain (big red one that didn't rinse out)

Pulling out the scissors causes a bit of trepidation but holding on to these items ad naseum seems wasteful. I'm sure whoever made them would rather they be enjoyed. At least that's how I feel about the things I make....

J, excited
