Wide Backings -- Where?

Would you all mind sharing with me if you have a favorite online source for wide fabric for backings? My LQS is limited. It's a 1930s repro scrappy quilt. I was favoring yellow. I guess I can go with white but there's a lot of white in the top, and that would make it pretty bland, I think. I usually get pretty garish with my scrappy quilts. My email addy is sriddles at aol dot com, if you'd druther not answer online. Thank you so much.

I have only bought from this source at shows but they have a wonderful variety of wide backings and I think the prices are reasonable.

Sherry, I've ordered from widefabrics.com, backsidefabrics.com, and baysidequilting.com. I've had good service each time and was happy with the fabric. And I so love not having to piece the backing!

Forgive me - it's a strange morning. It just strikes me ironic/funny reading a quilter say she loves *not* having to piece something. :-)

Hadn't thought about it that way! It is rather strange, isn't it?

I know Hancock's of Paducah has some wide backs. I've also ordered some wide backs from Keepsake.

Fabric.com also carries wide backing. Free shipping if you spend $35 or more.

NAYY, but I have purchased from fabric.com often & am pleased with their service.

Personally, I've never used a "wide" backing - sometimes I like to get "creative" with my backings & I love making a teeny, tiny dent in my stash!

Hi Sherry,

I've bought 108" tone on tone backing here:

's a brilliant yellow in the bunch. I like it because it is decent fabric at only 6.98/yd.

However, there are fancier backings available here:

I like fabric.com because they give free shipping on orders over $35--and whenever there's been a mix-up (once they sent the wrong fabric, and once some flannel came with holes in it), they've always made it right.

Howdy!

Thank you, Darling! When hand quilting, one less batch of seams is appreciated. ;-P I can see the seams on the front; have to feel for the ones on the back; easier to not have them there. The needle lasts longer, too.

Cheers!

I don't mind piecing a backing - just so easy after trying to decide how many sides a triangle* has. Just received a sale announcement that BackSide Fabrics is having a 24 hour sale of 25% off and they have wide fabric. I just honestly can't remember ordering from them but I guess I did. The coupon code for the 25% off is CM2009 if you happen to find a good one there. Polly (* if you count fabrics with nearly no difference in the right and wrong sides, a triangle has 6 sides)

Someone in this group put me onto Marshall dry goods and I've used several of their reasonably priced backing fabrics and have been well pleased.

Groan! I just don't need to think about triangles having six sides, thank you very much.

And actually, I guess I don't *mind* piecing a backing - but usually by the time I finish a top, I don't want to spend time sewing one more seam! And the wide backings are usually less expensive for full-size quilts - I like that a lot!

Well, I used your code and it worked! 25% off a back that was

*already* a clearance price! Thank you!

Unfortunately, it won't work with this top I had in mind. It's a fabulously, garishly loud Moda batik tie-dyed print with reds, yellows, orange, blue! I love it! Three yards for $27! 108 wide!

Unfortunately, it won't go with the quilt top I had in mind. So now I have an orphan top *plus* an orphan backing. Sigh. Unless I can convince myself that a tie-dyed batik will work with a 1930s nine-patch. This quilt is for me, and it

*would* make me goofily happy to look at it. And you *did* say there really is no such thing as the quilt police, no?

Go for it, Sherry. I'm betting that everytime you turn back your quilt that the wild backing will make you smile. Sort of like wearing racy stuff from Victoria's Secret beneath a sober gray suit. Polly
