Dangnabbit!

Before working on the black-gray silk burnout velvet, I decided to give my sewing space a looooong overdue cleaning-sorting-stowing. Too many I'll-finish-this-someday projects, scraps from long ago finished garments (WHY can't I just throw them away?), waaaay too much stash, and a SHOCKING amount of dust! So I spent three days scrupulously sorting, labeling and boxing tons of fabric, tossing the WIP stuff and old scraps, putting many pieces in the donate stack, and then giving the room a good dusting and vacuuming. Achoo!

Here is the pattern I finally chose for the top:

last night, I laid out the fabric...and discovered that over about half the width the pattern is exactly on grain, but on the other half the pattern slews off about 2" selvedge to selvedge. (Insert filthy cuss words here) What to do? I could cut with the pattern, and risk having the garment hang off to the side. Or I could cut with the true grain, but then the very distinct pattern would not be straight. Neither appeals to me. So I quit last night, and slept on it.

Inspiration: I had bought an extra 1/2 yard of fabric to be sure I had enough to match the center fronts and the CB seam. So today I lay the fabric out flat, placed the front pieces, one above the other but reversed, along the good selvedge (making sure the center fronts were also on the same part of the fabric pattern), and then checked to see if I had enough fabric to do the same with the two back pieces. Nope, lacking 8". Start again: The two front pieces along the "good" selvedge, and the backs as close to ongrain along a fold nearest to the good side. OK! this would work, and I have plenty of fabric left to locate the sleeves in positions to match the pattern along the horizontal line of the bustline. Also lots of room to cut the facings to match the pattern at CF.

Thanks to Hilary Carton of the SewBiz list for giving me a shove in the right direction late last night! ;-) The two fronts and facings are cut, and the back pieces laid out ready to be cut. Break time...

Ah... Simple, but sophisticated! :)

Yes, the " [fabric] is the thing"! ;-) I decided against the one with the draped front, because the wrong side shows, and it would not work with this fabric. I don't want anything to detract from the design in the velvet.

Beverly, who just spent a couple hours getting it cut out, with all the designs matching front and back and side to side, including the facings.

I hope! Now if only all goes well in the sewing, I'm planning to wear it in less than 48 hours....

No doubt, Beverly, you will be the Bell of the Ball. Lovely! Emily

Not aiming for "Bell", I would like to make sure my arch rival in high school has nothing to turn her nose up at. We both entered a Singer sewing contest in '56, the results did not please her, and she made sure I knew it.

Stupid how much high school slights still sting....

And, who knows, maybe my "first love" will show up. ;-}

Oh yes, then all the more reason for a dream outfit! We'll be anxiously awaiting photos. I hope I can make it to our 60th graduation anniversary in 2 years, since I've not been to any previously. I have the pattern by which I made my dress for Senior Day and will make an identical one, except with modern fabric that wasn't available then. Emily
