First time

[written 10 June 2009]

I've been using sewing machines fifty or sixty years, but this is the first time I've sewed my finger.

There would have been almost no damage had I calmly backed the needle out, as I do when I stab myself with a hand-sewing needle, but reflex jerked the finger away from the thing that had hurt it. Owie!

Bled so much that I had to put a bandaid on it before I could get back to work, and I had to hold my hand over my head for a while to get the bleeding slow enough to cover with a bandaid. At least I was well away from the white linen before the blood started welling up -- that may be because it's almost instinctive by now that when I wound a fingertip, I press the tip of another finger against it.

Worst of all, I had to do the dishes tonight, and it's sore enough that I may have to wash them again tomorrow night. On the bright side, a machine-needle gash is on the side of the finger, so I can still type.

11 June follow-up: much to the disappointment of the usual dishwasher, it's healing nicely and didn't need another soak in hot, soapy water.

I machine-sewed my twin sister's finger about 63 years ago. She just would not stop pestering me while I was making doll clothes. Mom had to come back the needle out, her finger was that stuck. :-}

OUCH!!! I had to stop sewing on DD's wedding dress for a couple of hours after a similar accident. No way was I going to risk blood stains on white satin.

Good news, take care you don't get a secondary infection.

OW OW OW OHHHHHH OW OW OW!!!!!

I had such empathy pains for you, Joy. One and only time I've done that was a single careless moment with the industrial machine. Coulda been worse.

I have such empathy for you, I think I felt my cup of coffee coming back on me there for a minute. :(

I sincerely hope you continue healing quickly. And I'm SO relieved for you that you did not gush all over the white linen. That would have just added insult to injury.

Fix some of Olwyn Mary's 5 minute cup o cake. That will make you feel better!! ;) (am I projecting again??? lol)

Capt. Dick of TreadleOn once managed to drive a needle into the bone of his finger -- and I think it was on his industrial treadle, a Singer

30-15. That called for an ER visit, IIRC. Our machines are wonderful creative devices, but they can bite!

I would assume it's the sewists equivalent to the Purple Heart, awarded to those who suffer injury in action (sewing action in this case). ;)
