kilt project

Well, the kilt is finished and doesn't look too bad for a first attempt.

Not at all bad! Of course, the wool one will hang and swing a lot better! ;)

Yay!!! Thanks for the picture. You did marvelously well. Especially considering it's a first attempt at a new experiment. :)

Are you running to the porch to see if UPS is coming with your tartan yet? ;) We'll make you a fine fabric junkie if you stay around too long. lol

Good work.

Sure will. This one is a bit over 5 yards. The tartan kilt will be a full 8 yards :)

hehehe. My wife is already griping about my stash. I expect to order the tartan next week from Scotland. It'll take 10 to 12 weeks to get here. Getting the real stuff :)

Mike, what tartan are you going to be using ? I live in N.E Scotland (looking very pretty at the moment with snow, sunshine and clear blue skies-between the blizzards!), and kilts are commonly worn especially for 'dress' occasions. Many men and boys have their own kilts, a common coming of age present, and are willing to wear them at the drop of a hat, no need to watch Braveheart Cea, its here on the doorstep. I hope when my girls get married their spouses opt for kilts as opposed to penguin suits (top hat and tails) would love to see my DH in a kilt, he has a great pair of legs..... Liz

Hey Mike,

Can you repost the site you are ordering your tartan from? I thought I bookmarked it but I didn't. Wanted to show my Mike and couldn't find it again. :(

He thought you did a marvelous job and that you looked very comfy. :)

Thanks!

I'm going with MacNeil of Barra. A few guys have been telling me how comfortable kilts are so I made one out of denim to try it out. They're right, kilts are much more comfortable than jeans. I'll probably wear em more than I wear jeans now. I'm making a second denim one while I wait for the tartan :)

Looks pretty good for a first attempt...heck, to me, it looks good regardless of how many times you've made it as "true" kilts scare the boogies out of me!! HOwever......you need a different shirt with it definitely

Couple weeks back I did a Civil War ball, and the last couple in the grand march had him in a pair of plaid pants. Sometime during the evening I asked about a kilt. "My wife won't let me," he said sadly. The pants were wool, of 19thC uniform cut, and his plaid boxers (completely non-PC) were visible in the waistband cut-out.

ok Mike, that'll be an improvement but the bumbag (what d'you call it in the US?) has to be rethought. As an interpretation of traditional sporran it falls way short. And do you plan to wear socks with those combat boots? We'll get you sorted yet!

I was a bit surprised that my wife has no problem at all with my wearing a kilt. She seems to kind of like it. Got a second one in the works now with narrower pleats and darker blue poly/cotton blend.
