What's everybody WORKING on?

I am: cross stitching a pillow top cross stitching another little summer pattern from M Designs knitting the last piece in my Amish throw (before assembling the thing) and knitting the second sleeve of a cardigan.

I am thinking longingly of the many other projects I have on hand to start........

This weekend I'm going to get busy on my March squares.

of course, most of these projects are because i'm silly enough to take the 4YO to yarn & fabric stores with me... he had vacation last week, so i took him up to Center Harbor specificly to go to Patternworks & Keepsake quilting. he *loved* it! :) that's where we picked up the kitty & pajamas kit (he was looking for it because he saw it on thier website) & the leather bottom slippers stuff. i give him an 'allowance' so he can buy fat quarters of fabric. he uses them as blankies for his tractors :) i'll be swiping bits off them for his cat quilt. that way he can keep them forever. i offered to teach him to knit a few weeks ago & he thought about it & said he wasn't big enough yet. he does have quite a few fine motor difficulties (he's mildly autistic) so i'll let him decide if he's ready. i might show him finger chaining or make him an oversize spool knitter... lee

Yep. I'm getting better at remembering all those nasty little words that are so useful in Scrabble and useless in daily life! Annoys me that it doesn't allow some fiber terms, though, like diz. Now that would be a very useful Scrabble word, indeed!

I'm mostly working with avocado pits soaked in ammonia. Seems to work better on cotton than wool, though. It washed right out of the wool despite pre-mordanting with alum. I'm also having another go with black beans. If they don't work this time, I'm giving up and over-dying with black walnut hulls. I have a jar of those soaking in vinegar water. All in all, Koolaid is a lot easier, and it was on sale for 12 cents a pack at our local market this week. I picked up 4 packets each of Mango and Pineapple. Big Spender!

I do find it a great way of clearning my mind when there is to much going on, to many projects all at once wanting attention.

I do win sometimes, but that is OK, and indeed like you I am learning new words I hardly every use again. Maybe we have to write to the Scrabble company (do not know who owns the rights now) and suggest some of the great words we know as indeed "diz" I used one last Tuesday at a Guild demonstration combing a Shedland fleece. Amazing how well it works and how easy to spin after a good combing and diz use.

My trial with the black beans did not work very well either, and I wonder if the beans were to old or the wrong ones.

It is indeed nice to do the dyeing and getting good results. We did some in the micro wave with Ciba dyes on wool. Worked like a dream and was also very instand.

Quite often, actually, but then I certainly don't have the maven set at the most expert level, only "advanced". ;) I also resort to the "suggestions" option a little more than I probably should, but that's a good way to learn new words when I have to look the suggestions up in the program's dictionary.

Trouble is that it is so addicting that I don't get much knitting done in the evenings any more.

Sure is. It's more work but home combed fiber is just a delight to spin. I am so spoiled by it that I almost dislike spinning commercial roving.

Yes. I'm about to give up on then. There must be something I didn't catch about the method when the Navajo woman told me about it. Sigh.

A body could get very spoiled by acid dyes and such. I know I am. But part of me still wants to get color from kitchen bits like avocado pits and such.

Good luck with the avocado pits, make sure you do not boil you pot. I used the recipe out of, I think, Spinn Off some time ago, and when I did not watch to pot to closely it came to a rolling boil. I lost the nice colours, It became a blahh pink. I redid it and got better colours. Shows you that it is bad to multi task. Better to do one job good than many half assed. LOL

This is one reason I'm doing it by the sun tea method.

I've only got three things on the go:

  1. a hat for a friend at work ... to be felted. This is my brainless, easy streetcar project
  2. gloves and scarf in Noro Silk garden for a friends b-day in April
  3. my Mariah sweater... I start the hood tonight! Currently coveting: the clapotis scarf.... I know, I know, how trendy!
